Yankees | Aaron Hicks to be fourth outfielder

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 12:21:59 -0800

New York Yankees OF Aaron Hicks profiles as the team's fourth outfielder, and he can play all three outfield positions. He could be a late-inning replacement for OF Carlos Beltran in right field often, and he had an .870 OPS against left-handed pitchers last year.

Fantasy Tip: An injury anywhere in the outfield could open up significant playing time for Hicks as an option for depth in deep mixed leagues. Hicks could also be a sneaky option in daily formats against the right southpaws if he finds his way into the starting lineup.

Yankees | Ike Davis joining Yanks?

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 10:33:57 -0800

Free-agent 1B Ike Davis (Athletics) is expected to sign a minor league deal soon, and the New York Yankees are in the mix.

Fantasy Tip: Davis would represent an insurance policy at first base behind Mark Teixeira with Greg Bird expected to miss the entire season. Davis has some pop and would be intriguing with the short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium in AL-only leagues.

Yankees | Carlos Beltran drops weight over winter

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 09:54:20 -0800

New York Yankees OF Carlos Beltran reportedly lost 10 pounds over the winter, according to a source. "(I) might try and steal some bases this year," Beltran said.

Fantasy Tip: Beltran was a consistent bet for 20-plus homers and 20-plus steals once upon a time, but those days are long gone. The 38-year-old eight-time All-Star didn't steal a base in 133 games last year, so the Yankees and his owners would probably be happy if he can provide something close to the .279 batting average, 19 home runs and 67 RBI he did last season. He's a late-round fantasy consideration at best.

Yankees | CC Sabathia feeling great

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 09:04:57 -0800

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia said he's feeling great after checking himself into a month-long stint at a rehab facility last October for an alcohol problem. "I feel the best I have in three years. I am excited to get to Tampa with a clear head and a healthy body," Sabathia said. Sabathia finished last year strong, and he can thank a brace he wore on his right knee. He finished 3-1 with a 2.22 ERA in his last four starts, and he went six or more innings in three of those outings while fanning 19 in 24 1/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia's strong finish and strong mindset entering 2016 are promising, but the fact remains he'll be 36 in July and has been on the disabled list each of the last four years and hasn't gone over 200 innings since 2013. He'll have to compete to win a rotation spot this spring, too. He could be useful in stretches, but he's more of a deep mixed starting pitcher.

Yankees | CC Sabathia competing for rotation spot

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 09:01:03 -0800

New York Yankees SPs CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova are expected to compete for the No. 5 starting rotation spot this spring. Sabathia went 6-10 with a 4.73 ERA and gave up a career-high 28 home runs in 167 1/3 innings last season and will turn 36 in July. SP Bryan Mitchell will also be in the competition.

Sabathia did finish 2-1 with a 2.17 EAR in five September and October starts and gave up just two homers in 29 innings. Sabathia said last December he is already "light years ahead" of where he typically is in the offseason, and he expects to report to camp lighter than he has in years.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia clearly isn't the ace pitcher he once was, but if he comes into camp lighter, stronger and more determined, he could be useful for stretches in the New York rotation. His decreased velocity and penchant for allowing home runs is a serious concern, so he's nothing more than a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues if he wins a rotation spot.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka throwing off mound

Tue, 09 Feb 2016 13:22:47 -0800

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (elbow), who had arthroscopic surgery last October to remove a bone spur from his right elbow, is throwing off a bullpen mound. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild said Tanaka had a throwing session in New York Tuesday, Feb. 9. All the reports have been good on Tanaka's rehab program, and his injury dates back to when he pitched in Japan.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka's workload will continue to be monitored throughout the year, and he's at increasing risk of needing Tommy John surgery. Consider him a third fantasy starter, at best.

Yankees | Three Yankees prospects invited to camp

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 11:08:28 -0800

New York Yankees OF Aaron Judge, SS Jorge Mateo and SP James Kaprielian were invited to big-league camp.

Fantasy Tip: Judge appears to be the closest and could be called up at some point in 2016. All are only dynasty league options right now.

Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury healthy

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 11:15:02 -0800

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury is believed to be fully healthy after dealing with several injuries that slowed him down last year. The Yankees are expecting a bounce-back season from him in 2016, and they continue to believe he's one of their most talented players.

Fantasy Tip: Ellsbury's power took a drop (seven long balls), but it may have been a direct result of his ailments. He has a history of solid production when healthy, though, so he could be undervalued in your drafts and come at a nice value.

Yankees | Dustin Ackley to see time at 1B?

Mon, 01 Feb 2016 13:12:11 -0800

New York Yankees 2B Dustin Ackley is seen as a safety net at first base, and he's played the position extensively in the past.

Fantasy Tip: Ackley is pegged as a super utility player for the Yanks in 2016, but with injury and age concerns on this roster, he could see notable playing time eventually. He's a late-round flier in AL-only leagues.

Yankees | Small chance for Greg Bird

Mon, 01 Feb 2016 13:11:11 -0800

Updating a previous report, New York Yankees 1B Greg Bird (shoulder) is unlikely to work his way back into action for the end of the 2016 season, but it's not entirely impossible, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Bird shouldn't be drafted anywhere in 2016 aside from deeper keeper leagues. The Yanks will use some combination of Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez and Dustin Ackley at first base with Bird done for the year.

Yankees | Greg Bird's season over

Mon, 01 Feb 2016 11:36:44 -0800

New York Yankees 1B Greg Bird (shoulder) will miss all of the 2016 season, as he needs surgery to fix a torn labrum in his shoulder Tuesday, Feb. 2.

Fantasy Tip: Bird, one of the Yankees top prospects, had 11 home runs in just 46 games for New York last year. He most certainly would have had a big role in 2016 given injury concerns for both Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez. Bird will remain a notable prospect for dynasty and keeper leaguers given his excellent power profile, but you can't count on him until 2017 and beyond.

Yankees | Ivan Nova avoids arbitration

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 11:52:12 -0800

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $4.1 million deal Thursday, Jan. 28. The deal includes some performance bonuses.

Fantasy Tip: Nova's return from Tommy John surgery last year didn't go over very well, as he went 6-11 with a 5.07 ERA in 17 starts and struck out only 6.03 hitters per nine innings. He's never been a big strikeout artist, but he should be able to improve there another year removed from the surgery, and his ability to live on the ground makes him a sleeper candidate. Nova is late-round flier material in deep mixed formats.

Yankees | Starlin Castro to hit lower in order

Tue, 26 Jan 2016 13:28:04 -0800

New York Yankees 2B Starlin Castro is likely to hit lower in the order since the Yankees have OFs Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury to set the table at the top. "I think you wait and see how things kind of pan out the rest of the offseason before you start thinking about where you're going to hit people, but I think (Castro) gives you a lot of flexibility," manager Joe Girardi said.

Castro hit .345/.368/.574 with six home runs and 25 RBI in 50 games after Aug. 4 last year after shifting to second base full time. Most of Castro's starts last year with Chicago came as either the No. 5 hitter (49) or No. 6 hitter (38).

Fantasy Tip: Castro still has some pop and should benefit from everyday playing time and a role at the bottom of the order. There's talk he could play some third base, too, which might give him infield eligibility at three positions. That'd make him even more attractive in the later rounds as a bounceback candidate.

Yankees | Aroldis Chapman won't face charges

Thu, 21 Jan 2016 10:57:20 -0800

New York Yankees RP Aroldis Chapman will not be charged after he was accused of firing shots in his Davie, Fla., home during a domestic dispute with his girlfriend Oct. 30.

Fantasy Tip: This doesn't make him exempt from a potential suspension, but it is favorable. Chapman is a top-three reliever if he escapes a lengthy ban.

Yankees | Nathan Eovaldi inks deal

Tue, 19 Jan 2016 14:54:59 -0800

New York Yankees SP Nathan Eovaldi avoided arbitration and settled for a one-year deal worth $5.6 million.

Fantasy Tip: Eovaldi is a tough pitcher to figure out. On one side of the equation, he's one of the hardest-throwing pitchers in the league, and he's coming off a year that saw him win a career-high 14 games. On the other end of it, he finished with a 4.20 ERA and 1.45 WHIP, as opposing lineups hit .285 off the right-hander. All in all, he's not a bad late-round target.
