New York Yankees news, rumors and injuries
Fri, 01 Jul 2016 16:49:40 -0700
New York Yankees OF Carlos Beltran (hamstring) and 3B Alex Rodriguez are not in the starting lineup Friday, July 1. OF Aaron Hicks is starting in right field and batting eighth against San Diego Padres SP Colin Rea.
Fantasy Tip: Both Beltran and A-Rod are in danger of sitting out all weekend due to no DH in a National League park. Beltran has a nagging hammy injury, but he's been one of the most productive hitters on the team this year with a .297/.338/.570 slash line, 19 home runs and 53 RBI. Rodriguez continues to struggle and is losing playing time. It's hard to continue using a roster spot on him in mixed leagues. Hicks is nothing more than a desperation deep sleeper gamble in DFS.

Fantasy Tip: Teixeira's knee will need to be monitored through the rest of the year, but when he's playing he can provide notable pop in the majority of fantasy leagues. It's a good sign that he's hit .263 (5-for-19) with two home runs and two RBI in five games since returning from the DL.

Fantasy Tip: Gurriel is one to watch, as he could rise quickly to the major league level if he develops more power to all fields. Stay tuned for where he lands.

Fantasy Tip: Mark DeRosa had a great breakdown of McCann's swing on MLB Network. He demonstrated how McCann was flailing his hips open, with his backside out, and he was pulling off of pitches during his slump. The knee injury could be a reason why. Regardless, McCann hit two homers Wednesday and remains a high-end catcher in fantasy.

New York Yankees OF Carlos Beltran (hamstring) is not expected to start Friday, July 1, versus the San Diego Padres, according to manager Joe Girardi, who also expressed concern over the outfielder's ability to play the field during the upcoming weekend series in a National League park.
Fantasy Tip: Given his age and injury history, it wouldn't be a surprise at all to see Beltran limited exclusively to pinch-hitting duties throughout this entire interleague series in San Diego. If that's the case, Aaron Hicks would probably be the biggest beneficiary, but is a risky play for daily formats.

New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda was fantastic despite picking up a no-decision in his start Thursday, June 30, against the Texas Rangers. The six-year veteran went six innings, allowing only one run on two hits and three walks, including a solo homer. He also recorded a season-high 12 strikeouts.
Fantasy Tip: It's a little baffling that Pineda didn't go out for one more inning, as he threw only 92 pitches before being pulled, but nonetheless, this was arguably his best outing of the season. Furthermore, it was his second superb start in a row, and he finishes the month of June having allowed three earned runs or less in all six of his starts, bringing his ERA down from 6.92 to 5.24 in the process. Pineda is clearly trending up right now and owners would be wise in trying to acquire his services from here on out.

Fantasy Tip: Tex is 5-for-15 (.333) with two homers in the last week, and he presents a solid play against A.J. Griffin.

Fantasy Tip: Neither Hicks nor Torreyes provide enough offensive certainty to use as a flyer against A.J. Griffin today.

Fantasy Tip: McCann was batting just .207 through 58 at-bats during the month of June entering play Wednesday, so perhaps this is the start of him beginning to break out of a slump. Despite his power, he should be viewed as a mediocre catching option in seasonal fantasy leagues and a hit-or-miss option for DFS.

Fantasy Tip: This was just the third time in 16 starts this year where Tanaka had allowed more than four runs in a game. He will look to turn things around in his next outing versus the Chicago White Sox Monday, July 4.

The New York Yankees have signed Chaminade Prep High School OF Blake Rutherford, the No. 18 pick overall in the 2016 MLB draft. He will receive a $3,282,000 million signing bonus, which is well above the suggested slot value of $2,441,600.
Fantasy Tip: Rutherford is likely several years away from reaching the majors but his progress through the minors should be monitored by dynasty fantasy league owners.

New York Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira (knee) is taking a "day off" Wednesday, June 29, according to manager Joe Girardi. However, Teixeira said he was too sore to play Wednesday after tearing cartilage in the knee earlier this year. Monday's marathon game put added stress on his knee. The lingering soreness will require periodic rest days throughout the rest of the year, and Girardi said Teixeira is expected to return Thursday, June 30. Teixeira is expected to play first base for all three games in San Diego this weekend.
Fantasy Tip: This shouldn't come as a huge surprise, as Tex just returned from a lengthy DL stint for the same knee this past weekend. The Yanks must rest Teixeira often to keep him healthy in the second half. It's encouraging that he's had five hits (two homers) in his first 15 at-bats back, and he can remain useful in deeper mixed leagues when he's playing.

New York Yankees OF Carlos Beltran (hamstring) will miss at least two games after an MRI came back "clean" on his tight hamstring. Beltran leads the Yankees in home runs (19), RBI (53) and OPS (.906). His availability against the San Diego Padres without the designated hitter this weekend puts his availability in question there, too. The Yankees are not expected to put Beltran on the disabled list, though. New York isn't expected to call up OF Aaron Judge, who has seven home runs in his last 10 games with Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Fantasy Tip: Beltran is having a fantastic season in the Bronx, but at his age (39), he may need extra time to heal, and the Yanks will certainly be cautious with him. Whenever he's ready to return, though, get him back into all starting lineups. Aaron Hicks, who is hitting just .206 with three homers and 15 RBI, benefits the most in right field with Beltran dinged up.

New York Yankees OF Carlos Beltran (hamstring) and 1B Mark Teixeira are not in the starting lineup Wednesday, June 29. OF Aaron Hicks is starting in right field and is hitting eighth, while 2B Rob Refsnyder is at first base and is batting ninth against Texas Rangers SP Nick Martinez.
Fantasy Tip: Beltran tweaked his hammy last night and is day-to-day, so keep an eye on when he might return. He's been the Yankees' best hitter this year and should be in all starting lineups when he's back in there. Both Hicks and Refsnyder won't do much for DFS owners hitting that low in the batting order. Look elsewhere.

Texas Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre went 3-for-5, including a two-run home run and an RBI single, and scored twice versus the New York Yankees on Tuesday, June 28. Beltre also delivered the tying and go-ahead runs late in the ninth inning of a comeback win in the opener of this four-game series on Monday, June 27.
Fantasy Tip: The homer was his first since June 3 and the 11th of the season. Since returning from a seven-game absence due to a hamstring strain on June 16, Beltre is batting .347 with 11 RBI and 11 runs scored. The power has obviously been a bit lacking for the 37-year-old, but the .285 average and 51 RBI is the kind of production owners want from their fantasy third basemen. He's a solid low-tier starting option at the hot corner and should be trusted as a regular starter in most leagues.
