New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova will be available in trade, sources indicate. He has one more year left on his contract and the team would like to obtain pitchers with several years of control left in their contracts.
Fantasy Tip: Nova was 37-18 with a 4.00 ERA from 2011-13, before he was sidelined by Tommy John surgery in 2014. Obviously the team hopes he has success along these lines. As for your draft, Nova is a risky pickup in anything but the lower rounds because he is several months removed from the elbow surgery.

Updating a previous report, the New York Yankees remain interested in Chicago Cubs 2B Starlin Castro but are not willing to part with him for OF Brett Gardner, according to a source with knowledge of the organization's thinking.
Fantasy Tip: If the Yankees trade Gardner, it would likely be as part of a package for starting pitching help. Castro hit .265 with 11 home runs and 69 RBIs in 151 regular-season games in 2015 and is being shopped by the Cubs to multiple teams this offseason, including New York. If the Yankees stand pat at second base, Dustin Ackley and Rob Refsnyder would platoon at the position in 2016 but would only be worth drafting in AL-only and deep mixed fantasy leagues.

The New York Yankees are expected to make a serious run at free-agent SP Wei-Yin Chen (Orioles), according to a source. The 30-year-old left-hander is believed to be seeking a deal lasting at least five years.
Fantasy Tip: Chen went 11-8 with a 3.34 ERA in 31 starts for Baltimore in 2015 and is 46-34 with a 3.72 ERA in his career. Although Yankee Stadium is far more hitter-friendly than Camden Yards, Chen might not experience much of a dip in fantasy value with a move to New York due to his success versus AL East teams. He is a solid, if unspectactular, rotation option for single-universe and deep mixed leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Middle infield was an area of weakness for the Yankees last season, and adding a veteran presence to the middle of the diamond and lineup would be a significant boost to their team. Still, Zobrist or Prado shouldn't be confused with heavy lifters in fantasy terms. Both are capable of returning a respectable batting average while chipping in across the counting stats. However, neither are contributors in the stolen base column.

Fantasy Tip: Sanchez is a big-time catching prospect for the Yanks that hit .274 with 18 home runs and 62 RBI in two minor league stops in 2015. He certainly will see time in the big leagues at some point in 2016 and should be picked up in dynasty and keeper formats.

Fantasy Tip: Is this foreshadowing that New York will trade Brett Gardner this offseason? It could be, but stay tuned. Hicks is a candidate to play center field if Gardner is moved, but either way, it could improve his fantasy stock in deep mixed leagues with a much better home hitting environment. The move of Hicks also assures Byron Buxton more playing time in Minnesota. The trade of Murphy (a backup catcher) is further evidence that the Yanks see Gary Sanchez as close to becoming the primary backup to Brian McCann. Keep Sanchez's name close in dynasty leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Bird will still be draft-worthy in the latter rounds of traditional drafts after a strong showing down the stretch.

Fantasy Tip: With Dellin Betances a fine closing option for the Yankees, Miller could be expendable. Miller had a fine year closing out games for the Yanks, but a trade to another club wouldn't necessarily ensure that he'd keep the same job. Betances would receive a big bump in value if Miller leaves the Bronx.

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia is not guaranteed to earn a starting rotation spot next year, according to general manager Brian Cashman. Sabathia just completed a rehab stint for alcohol abuse. Cashman's statement has nothing to do with Sabathia's stay in an alcohol rehab center and everything to do with the abundance of live arms on the team's staff. Sabathia has gone 23-27 with a 4.81 ERA while losing velocity on his fastball in the last three years, and he's also battled an arthritic and degenerative right knee. He said he's already started working out for next year despite spending a month in rehab.
Fantasy Tip: The lone bright spot for Sabathia last year was his rebound after he returned with a knee brace in the final month of the season, and the Yanks hope he can carry that into 2016. A lot will depend on his health and the velocity on his fastball. Even if Sabathia makes it into the rotation, he'll be a matchup play, at best, in traditional fantasy leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Murphy's postseason run may have inflated his stock in the real and fake game, so be careful not to overvalue him based on the small sample size. Still, Murphy is a reliable fantasy contributor who can chip in across four categories, and if he returns to being active on the base paths, he helps in all five standard categories. View Murphy as a low-end second base option in the majority of seasonal leagues leading into the 2016 season.

New York Yankees OF Brett Gardner (wrist) played most of the season with a wrist injury, according to hitting coach Alan Cockrell. Gardner hit just .203 after Aug. 1. He was hit by a pitch on the right wrist April 13, and that's the incident that the injury possibly stemmed from.
Fantasy Tip: Gardner will likely be an upper-echelon outfielder next season, but he's 32 years old and four years removed from his 49-steal season. He has swiped 24, 21 and 20 bags, respectively the last three years, but his power has been up the last two. Just don't overvalue him in drafts thinking you're getting an elite SB threat.

Fantasy Tip: Miller went 3-2 with a 2.04 ERA in 60 regular-season games, successfully converting 36 of 38 save opportunities. He walked 20 and struck out 100 batters over 61 2/3 innings. Miller should be one of the first relievers selected in fantasy baseball drafts next season.

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) had arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone spur from his right elbow Tuesday, Oct. 20, and the typical recovery time includes six weeks of exercise and strengthening followed by a throwing program. The Yankees said the injury dates back to when Tanaka pitched in Japan.
Fantasy Tip: Tanaka pitched all year with a partially torn elbow ligament but still missed time with other ailments in 2015. He went 12-7 with a 3.51 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 24 starts. Tanaka should be good to go for the start of the 2016 season, but this is just another reminder that he's a big injury risk as a top-of-the-rotation fantasy starter.

New York Yankees 1B Greg Bird could begin the 2016 season in the minor leagues, despite his impressive showing at the major league level after being called up. He hit .257 with 11 home runs and 31 RBIs in just 157 at-bats for the Yankees but could wind up at Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in order to receive regular playing time.
Fantasy Tip: Mark Teixeira was having a solid year at the plate before going down with a fractured right leg, batting .255 with 31 home runs and 79 RBIs in 111 games. He is expected to be completely healthy by the time spring training rolls around and will regain his starting job at first base, making it difficult for the Yanks to find regular at-bats for Bird.

Fantasy Tip: Samardzija did not have a great 2015 season but should still receive a lot of interest in free agency. The Yankees likely will be looking for add starting pitching this offseason but may stay away from the big names available. Samardzija likely will be a middle- to late-round option in leagues next season no matter where he plays.
