Yankees | Mark Teixeira on new diet

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 09:57:02 -0800

New York Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira has become gluten-free, sugar-free and dairy-free, and he's hoping the change will help him avoid injuries. "I look at the last two years as hopefully more of a bump in the road," Teixeira said. "The way I feel now, I feel like a kid again. I feel like I did a few years ago when I was hitting 30-plus homers and driving in 100 runs, playing almost every single day." Teixeira played in 123 games last year and hit just .216 with 22 home runs and 66 RBI. He'll turn 35 in April and hasn't played more than 123 games since 2011. Teixeira reconfigured his body in the offseason, and he added 13 pounds of muscle while losing fat.

Fantasy Tip: Teixeira doesn't even crack the top 20 in our first baseman rankings, mainly because of his poor health in recent seasons. However, his new and improved body and diet gives hope that he can at least return to the 20-homer mark again this year, if he can stay healthy. That's a big if, though. He's worth consideration at the tail end of standard drafts as a corner infield option.

Yankees | Alex Rodriguez could see time at 1B

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 13:36:11 -0800

New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez could see some time at first base this spring, and manager Joe Girardi plans to discuss it with him when players officially report to camp Wednesday, Feb. 25. "I'll talk to him about taking some grounders over there just to be prepared, if I need to give a guy a day off or however we chose to do it," Girardi said. "But yeah, I'm going to talk to him about it and see how comfortable he is." Rodriguez will likely need plenty of at-bats this spring in order to learn first base and to be ready for opening day.

Fantasy Tip: Because of all the uncertainty surrounding Rodriguez after sitting out all of the 2014 season, he's only a late-round selection, at best, in standard leagues. The biggest uncertainty will be his playing time, but adding first base to his duties will help with that. Monitor him this spring to see how his power stick plays. Rodriguez can still help fantasy owners as corner infield depth.

Yankees | Ivan Nova throws again

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 13:26:50 -0800

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova (elbow) threw off the mound for the third time Tuesday, Feb. 24, since undergoing Tommy John surgery last April, but he was limited to strictly fastballs. Nova is feeling no pain in his right elbow, though.

Fantasy Tip: Nova is too big of a gamble to take in standard 12-team leagues this year as he recovers from TJS. Remember, starting pitchers often have a period of adjustment when they initially return from elbow reconstruction. Keep an eye on him for now. Nova could become a valuable waiver wire acquisition later in the season.

Yankees | A-Rod says he'll be fine with no PEDs

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 13:05:22 -0800

New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez believes he will be fine without performance enhancing drugs, despite his year-long suspension. Rodriguez admitted he is worried about the mental aspects of how he will fare.

Fantasy Tip: The combination of the mental stress and not using PEDs could take its toll on Rodriguez, who is a risky pickup in fantasy leagues because of all the uncertainty. Keep an eye on how he does in spring training, as the media scrutiny will be relentless.

Yankees | CC Sabathia's weight up

Sun, 22 Feb 2015 13:09:11 -0800

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (knee) entered spring camp weighing 305 pounds. After drastic weight losses the past two years, Sabathia and team trainers and doctors determined his ideal weight should be between 295 and 305 pounds.

Fantasy Tip: It begs the question of whether the extra weight has caused his knee to degenerate, but the doctors suggest he is at ideal weight so the weight may not be the issue. Sabathia's best days may be behind him as an earlier tip suggests, so proceed with caution and know his fantasy value has decreased.

Yankees | CC Sabathia taking PRP shots

Sat, 21 Feb 2015 10:33:28 -0800

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (knee) said he is continuing to take platelet-rich plasma shots for his "degenerative" knee condition.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia pitched in only eight games last season and the results (3-4, 5.28 ERA) were abysmal. He claims that his surgically-repaired right knee feels good but it would be smart to take a wait-and-see approach before you consider drafting him in the later rounds. Still, his better days appear to be behind him.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka on normal schedule?

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 14:08:29 -0800

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (elbow), who feels he's completely healed from a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, is expected to be on a spring schedule normal to last year's. He will throw another bullpen session Sunday, Feb. 22. "I feel it's healed," Tanaka said. "I'm confident that I can get through this season."

Fantasy Tip: It's still early, but this is good progress to see from Tanaka. However, you'll need to remain extremely cautious in the late middle rounds of drafts this year with a Tanaka selection. Most pitchers that delay surgery on a UCL injury eventually need TJS, so Tanaka could just delaying the inevitable. Keep tabs on his spring work and make sure you're protected if you take a chance on him.

Yankees | Alex Rodriguez could platoon in DH role

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 14:05:51 -0800

New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez could be stuck in a platoon at designated hitter this year with OF Garrett Jones facing right-handers and Rodriguez facing lefties. Historically, Rodriguez has been successful against lefties after struggling (.585 OPS in 50 at-bats) against them in 2013. In a best-case scenario, Rodriguez could serve as the backup to 3B Chase Headley, and he might also see some time at first base as a backup for 1B Mark Teixeira.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez is a giant question mark entering the 2015 season after sitting out all of last year on a suspension for performance-enhancing drugs. At age 39, he's not the same player he was in his prime, obviously, and he'll struggle to catch up to fastballs. However, he could provide some pop at the tail end of mixed league drafts to round out your rosters.

Yankees | Ivan Nova progressing nicely

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 13:45:03 -0800

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova (elbow) has progressed very well from his Tommy John surgery, and he is expected to be ready relatively early in the season.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners would be wise to take a wait-and-see approach with Nova. There is upside, but pitchers usually require an adjustment period when returning from TJS. It is definitely a situation to monitor, though.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka feels great

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 11:14:33 -0800

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) said his right elbow is feeling better than ever. He's dealing with a slightly torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, but he has avoided surgery. "I actually feel a little bit better than last year," Tanaka said. "My overall body and health is better." The team may start out with a six-man rotation to protect Tanaka and others. Tanaka said he's already thrown some cutters and has no plans to cut down on the pitch this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka is feeling good now, but it almost seems that he's a ticking time bomb with his elbow. Even in the later rounds of your mixed league drafts, Tanaka is an incredible risk unless you have plenty of pitching insurance around him.

Yankees | Alex Rodriguez must earn PT

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 10:38:03 -0800

New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez will have to earn his playing time this year, according to manager Joe Girardi. Rodriguez is coming off a season-long suspension for performance-enhancing drugs in 2014. 3B Chase Headley has already been named the starting third baseman, so Rodriguez will have to find the majority of his at-bats at designated hitter. Girardi is expecting to play Rodriguez a lot this spring, and the team might even send him to the minor league camp to receive more at-bats.

Fantasy Tip: A-Rod will be one of this spring's biggest storylines. Fantasy players could care less, but they do want to know how he'll bounce back from a year off. That's really anyone's guess, but Rodriguez is a professional hitter and should still have some utility left for owners at the end of mixed league drafts.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka throws 21 pitches

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 13:09:35 -0800

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) threw 21 pitches during his first bullpen session of the year at the team's minor league complex Thursday, Feb. 19. Tanaka missed two and a half months last season while rehabilitating a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Fantasy Tip: Tanaka flashed high-end results through his first 16 starts last season before he was shut down. With the threat of Tommy John surgery still looming, his fantasy stock is truly up in the air. Expect his name to be thrown out in the later middle rounds on draft day, where there is huge profit potential, if he returns to pitch at the level he did to start the 2014 season. Still, there is plenty of risk.

Yankees | Yoan Moncada works out again

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 10:58:52 -0800

Cuban SS Yoan Moncada received another private workout with the New York Yankees Wednesday, Feb. 18, according to the New York Post. The Yankees see Moncada as a second or third baseman in the majors, but they are reportedly wary of a price tag that could go beyond a $40 million signing bonus. New York would be subject to a 100% tax if they signed Moncada because they've exceeded their international signing limits.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka to throw Thursday

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 13:57:12 -0800

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) took the day off Wednesday, Feb. 18, after throwing long toss Tuesday, Feb. 17. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild said Tanaka will throw a side session off the mound Thursday, Feb. 19, and he hasn't had any setbacks since suffering a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament last July.

Fantasy Tip: The Yankees must be very careful not to overwork Tanaka this spring. How often do we see pitchers forego Tommy John surgery only to later on succumb to the ligament replacement surgery? Tanaka becomes a huge risk and bust candidate because of the nature of his injury. If you're drafting him in the later rounds, you better make sure you have pitching insurance.

Yankees | NY may use six-man rotation

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 13:56:30 -0800

New York Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild indicated that the team may go with a six-man rotation to open the season to reduce early-season strain on arms. The Yankees have a stretch of 30 games in 31 days starting April 17. The team is already dealing with several injury questions in their starting five. Ps Bryan Mitchell, Esmil Rogers, Adam Warren and Chase Whitley are building up stamina this spring, and each of them could be used as either starters or relievers.

Fantasy Tip: None of the Yankees' options for the sixth rotation spot to begin the season are really worth consideration in standard fantasy baseball leagues, mainly because this scenario is likely to be short-lived. However, whoever is slated to be the sixth rotation arm to start the year may be worth a small investment as a late-round flier in AL-only leagues.
