Athletics | Sean Doolittle throws Friday

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 14:49:32 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) played catch for the first time since being shut down with a shoulder strain in January Friday, March 27, and he said he's feeling good. He made 15 throws from 45 feet and 10 throws from 60 feet and was pain-free. Doolittle will play catch every other day and increase the distance of his throws. However, Doolittle won't return earlier than May.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle is expected to regain the closing role when he returns, but it's also entirely possible that Tyler Clippard keeps the job if he's performing well. Both relievers are worth drafting in deep mixed leagues, and it's preferable to handcuff them to each other.

Athletics | Josh Reddick unlikely for opener

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 11:05:28 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Josh Reddick (oblique) is unlikely to be ready for the season opener, according to manager Bob Melvin.

Fantasy Tip: This shouldn't come as a big surprise, as oblique strains can often be tricky and require plenty of rest. For that reason, Reddick ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) doesn't make for a strong FantasyScore play when he initially returns to action.

Athletics | Tyler Clippard the A's closer

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 10:59:19 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Tyler Clippard has been named the team's closer to start the season.

Fantasy Tip: Clippard enters as the closer because of an injury to Sean Doolittle (shoulder), who could miss the first month of the season. Both relievers are worth owning in deep mixed leagues, and Clippard could hang onto the job if he's pitching well when Doolittle returns.

Athletics | Coco Crisp could return Saturday

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 07:10:51 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp (elbow) could return to spring action Saturday, March 28.

Fantasy Tip: Crisp ($4,500, 9,0% of cap) has some ground to make up. Monitor his progress the next few days before deciding to use him as a low-end OF option on FantasyScore.

Athletics | Josh Reddick takes batting practice

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 16:31:38 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Josh Reddick (oblique) took batting practice Thursday, March 26, and is expected to return to the lineup Saturday, March 28, or Sunday, March 29.

Fantasy Tip: Continue to check back for updates on Reddick's ($3,500. 7.0%) pursuit to open the season with the team. He is a serious injury risk and played just 114 games in 2013 and 109 last year. Still there is power upside, and Reddick is a viable late-round selection if you're lacking pop in the endgame of drafts. Allow Reddick to prove his health before utilizing him in FantasyScore contests.

Athletics | Coco Crisp back on the field

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 16:12:03 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp (elbow) surprised teammates and manager Bob Melvin by taking part in warmups Thursday, March 26, as he was supposed to be out a few days. Crisp is nursing a sore elbow and received a cortisone shot Tuesday, March 24.

Fantasy Tip: Injuries are nothing new to Crisp ($4,500, 9.0% of cap), however it is encouraging he is feeling better so quickly. At 35, Crisp is a long way from his prime and only returned nine home runs and 19 stolen bases last season after going 20/20 in 2013. He is well within late-round-flier territory in deep mixed leagues and unlikely to have any major fantasy impact outside of runs and stolen bases. He is aggressively priced and an ill-advised option at FantasyScore, too.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle will throw Friday

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 14:48:38 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) will play catch for the first time Friday, March 27, since being diagnosed with a slight rotator cuff tear in his left shoulder in February.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle is expected to miss the first few weeks of the season, and Tyler Clippard will handle the ninth-inning duties in his absence. However, it isn't out of the question for Clippard to take the job and run with it. Both relievers are risky selections before the endgame of drafts in shallow leagues. In deep formats, both are suitable targets for saves. It is all speculation at this point how the bullpen roles will shake out when Doolittle returns, so the healthy arm with the job should be the priority.

Athletics | Ike Davis homers again

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 13:59:12 -0700

Oakland Athletics 1B Ike Davis hit his first home run of spring training Wednesday, March 25, and he is currently batting .543 (13-for-24).

Fantasy Tip: Davis ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) hit 58 home runs through the first 1171 at-bats of his career, but the 28-year-old has fallen out of favor with two organizations in two years since. Oakland has a knack for getting the most of their players, and Davis has upside. His spring should have him on your radar as a late-round flier in deep leagues, and he is a must-own player in AL-only formats. His FantasyScore price leaves a lot of room for profit if his recent surge continues into the season.

Athletics | Sean Doolittle begins throwing

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 07:06:49 -0700

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) began a throwing program Monday, March 23. The first step in the process was a session involving sock throws.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle could just miss the first couple of weeks, with Tyler Clippard filling in at closer. Clippard is a decent reliever to own even without save potential for ratios help and K's. Doolittle is a good second closer to target in traditional leagues.

Athletics | Drew Pomeranz nursing tight hip

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 22:13:34 -0700

Oakland Athletics P Drew Pomeranz (hip) was battling right hip tightness in his Cactus League spring outing Tuesday, March 24. He said it has happened before, but he thinks this is a one-time thing.

Fantasy Tip: Pomeranz remains in a fight for one of the two rotation jobs, but an injury at this juncture of spring training would be damaging. As it stands, if he can win a rotation job he would only be worth a look in AL-only fantasy leagues when rounding out a rotation.

Athletics | Coco Crisp receives cortisone shot

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 16:58:20 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp (elbow) received a cortisone shot. He's been dealing with reoccurring elbow soreness and will be out a few days.

Fantasy Tip: Crisp isn't a stranger to dealing with injuries. He hasn't played in more than 140 games in a season since 2007. Crisp is a late-round option who can help teams in stolen bases, while also potentially reaching double figures in homers.

Athletics | Josh Reddick eyeing weekend return

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 14:59:02 -0700

Oakland Athletics OF Josh Reddick (oblique) could see game action as early as this weekend, which is much earlier than anticipated after an MRI exam earlier this month on his right oblique strain put opening day in question. Reddick said he still has some tightness when swinging the bat, but he is throwing more than 100 feet without any discomfort. He also said he has enough time to be ready for opening day.

Fantasy Tip: The timetable seems optimistic, and moving Reddick up your draft cheat sheets is unadvised. He is a late-round flier with power upside, but he remains a serious injury risk. Reddick only played 114 and 109 games in the 2013 and 2014 seasons, respectively. Continue to check back for updates on his recovery and return timeline.

Athletics | Kendall Graveman appears a rotation lock

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 14:48:06 -0700

Oakland Athletics SP Kendall Graveman appears to be a lock to begin the season in the starting rotation after allowing only a single run through 15 innings this spring. Opposing batters are hitting just .143 against him, too. "We haven't seen him struggle," manager Bob Melvin said. "He's been great. He knows how to pitch."

Fantasy Tip: Graveman's fantasy stock is on the rise and his relief pitcher eligibility is a plus in particular formats. Still, he is extremely unproven with just 44 1/3 innings of minor league experience above Class A. In deep mixed leagues and AL-only formats, Graveman is a viable late-round flier. Don't count on him for punch outs, though, as he has a 6.3 K/9 throughout his minor league career and just eight through his 15 innings this spring.

Athletics | Brett Lawrie rounding into form

Sat, 21 Mar 2015 18:17:59 -0700

Oakland Athletics 3B Brett Lawrie hit a pair of doubles against the San Diego Padres Tuesday, March 17, and he hit a three-run home run against the Cincinnati Reds Saturday, March 21.

Fantasy Tip: Lawrie entered the majors with plenty of hype, but a series of injuries has stunted his growth. He will begin a fresh start with Oakland this year, but leaving Toronto means leaving behind a hitter-friendly home park. He is worth a flier in the later rounds, but don't count Lawrie being a regular starter for your fantasy team.

Athletics | Barry Zito pitching well

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 20:52:25 -0700

Oakland Athletics P Barry Zito has pitched well during the spring, and he worked another three perfect innings of relief Friday, March 20. He struck out five of the nine batters he faced. Zito is competing for a rotation job, and he has done nothing to take himself out of the competition. He might be an option in long relief, too.

Fantasy Tip: Zito's fantasy appeal would obviously vary greatly depending on what position he fulfills. FantasyScore owners will likely want to see him work in a regular season game or two before paying him any mind.
