Oakland Athletics news, rumors and injuries

Oakland Athletics 1B Billy Butler is a player the Athletics are willing to trade because he is scheduled to make $10 million in each of the next two seasons and was below average offensively in each of the last two seasons.
Fantasy Tip: Butler has seen his batting average drop in each of his last three seasons and has only 24 home runs in his last two seasons. Butler should still see solid playing time this season but may be an AL-only option at this time.

Fantasy Tip: The arrival of Khris Davis in left field is bad news for both Crisp and Canha. The 36-year-old Crisp isn't aging well, and you can no longer count on his best skill: stolen bases. He's nothing more than depth in deep AL leagues. Canha's playing time will also take a hit, and he boasts average skills, at best. He's also fodder for depth in AL-only formats.

Fantasy Tip: Davis hit 20 bombs in his final 183 at-bats to end 2015. When healthy he's a candidate to approach 40 homers, although the move to pitcher-friendly O.co Coliseum isn't the ideal move. Still, he should see everyday playing time in left field and will be undervalued in the middle rounds. His arrival is bad news for Mark Canha and Coco Crisp.

Fantasy Tip: Davis will surely be undervalued in 2016 fantasy drafts despite hitting 27 home runs last year and 20 in his final 183 at-bats. A move to pitcher-friendly O.co Coliseum will be a hit to his overall value, but he has the power to clear fences anywhere. It's not out of the question that he could hit 30 homers in Oakland. Target him as a steal in the middle rounds.

Fantasy Tip: Lowrie had some success in his last stop in Oakland, but that doesn't mean he'll repeat it in 2016. He has some pop in his bat, but O.co Coliseum will limit that ceiling. Lowrie is only eligible at third base to start, too, and he'll mainly be an infield target in deep mixed leagues at the tail end of drafts.

Oakland Athletics 1B Yonder Alonso is expected to play nearly every day with his new squad in 2016. He's more of a defensive whiz and hasn't hit more than nine home runs in a season, but he has an average of .340 for his on-base percentage in his six seasons, and he managed to hit .282 in 103 games in 2015.
Fantasy Tip: Average and on-base percentage are Alonso's strengths, so he's more attractive in leagues that count OBP. He can be useful in daily leagues against certain right-handers, too.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle is coming off an injury marred season, so Madson, and in deeper leagues, Axford, makes sense as fantasy handcuffs to Doolittle. Madson could also be useful for his strikeouts abilities in deeper leagues.

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp is expected to start in left field for the A's in 2016, if he's healthy. However, the 36-year-old played in just 44 games last year because of neck issues. 1B Mark Canha will see time at first base, but he, along with OFs Sam Fuld, Jake Smolinski and Andrew Lambo can fill in in the outfield.
Fantasy Tip: Canha gives fantasy owners the most to like of this group after drilling 16 home runs and driving in 70 RBI in 2015. How many games can you realistically expect Crisp to play given his age and injury concerns? There's a good chance he becomes a bench player even if he's healthy.

Fantasy Tip: Vogt had a career year as the A's starting catcher in 2015, hitting .261 with 18 home runs and 71 RBI. He'll be behind in spring training, so it's entirely possible he could open the season on the disabled list. That'll likely cause his draft stock to suffer, if ever so slightly.

Oakland Athletics 1B Billy Butler has ramped up his offseason conditioning routine leading into the 2016 campaign. "I think I'm getting older and I've got to do more things to stay young," Butler said. "I'm not old, but I'm old in baseball terms, getting there. It's one of those things where I've got to do more to keep up with these young bucks."
Fantasy Tip: Butler's batting average and RBI total has progressively dipped in each of the past three seasons following his career-best showing in 2012. Last year, Butler returned an underwhelming .251/.323/.390 slash line with just 15 home runs and 65 RBI, and at a deep fantasy position, it wasn't good enough to make him anything more than a cavernous mixed and AL-only option. He is an endgame flier to target in deep mixed league drafts entering the 2016 season.

Fantasy Tip: Crisp could be limited to start the season. If you plan to take Crisp in fantasy, plan to have plenty of depth on hand since he has a propensity for injury.

The Oakland Athletics are interested in keeping OF Josh Reddick long term. He can be a free agent after the 2016 season. Negotiations have not started, and he indicated he is not interested in extending talks into the season because it could be a distraction for him and the team.
Fantasy Tip: Reddick could have a giant season for fantasy owners as he plays for a big paypay. He should be viewed as a Top 40 fantasy outfielder in mixed formats.

Fantasy Tip: Doolittle is expected to be the team's closer with Ryan Madson working in a setup role in the eighth inning. If he is 100 percent, Doolittle could re-emerge as a must-start fantasy option in most seasonal formats.
Sun, 24 Jan 2016 23:47:51 -0800
Fantasy Tip: Alvarez is making his way back from shoulder surgery last July. He could be a tremendous fantasy option once he debuts as O.co Coliseum is a great pitcher's park.
Sun, 24 Jan 2016 23:47:15 -0800
Fantasy Tip: Parker is a big-time injury risk heading into the 2016 season. He isn't a bad low-risk option in the later rounds on draft day.
