Oakland Athletics news, rumors and injuries

Oakland Athletics RP Sean Doolittle (shoulder) threw his first bullpen session Thursday, July 30, and mixed in all his pitches while tossing 26 pitches. He said he felt good and his velocity was "definitely harder" than before.
Fantasy Tip: Time is running out this year for Doolittle to make an impact in Oakland's bullpen. There's no guarantee he could even surpass Edward Mujica as the closer after Tyler Clippard was traded away, either. Only stash Doolittle in the deepest of leagues if you're looking for saves avenues.

Fantasy Tip: It's really no surprise to see this happen, as Butler ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) has been having a relatively woeful year in his first campaign with the A's. In fact, he's currently registering career lows in average (.246), on-base percentage (.312) and slugging percentage (.378). As a result, it's tough to trust him right now while he's still scuffling, and Carrasco is no easy pitcher to go up against.

Oakland Athletics SP Chris Bassitt has tossed more than five innings in all four of his starts this year, and he's allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of his outings. He went a season-high 6 1/3 innings against the Cleveland Indians, who he faces Thursday, July 30, on July 11.
Fantasy Tip: Bassitt ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) has proven that he deserves an extended stay in the Oakland rotation, especially with them out of contention. He's not a bad second starting option on FantasyScore if you're looking to save money elsewhere on your roster.

Fantasy Tip: Butler ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) becomes a bit more attractive to daily gamers tonight, but he's still nothing more than a mediocre FantasyScore commodity without much power hitting in a pitcher-friendly environment.

Fantasy Tip: Crisp ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) is receiving a scheduled day off on his rehab assignment and has not suffered a setback. No timetable has been established for his return to the majors but the A's do not need to rush him back, thanks to the emergence of Billy Burns ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) in center field. Crisp should only be rostered in AL-only leagues.

Fantasy Tip: No timetable exists for Doolittle's return and it is uncertain if he will step back into the closer's role immediately after he is activated from the disabled list. Owners in AL-only and deep mixed leagues should continue to keep him on their roster, especially if they are participating in leagues that use the holds category.

Fantasy Tip: Davis ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) could be in line for a permanent move up in order after Ben Zobrist was traded away yesterday. That would be a positive development for his daily fantasy value. He's a decent value option for tonight's games on FantasyScore.
Wed, 29 Jul 2015 10:07:25 -0700
Oakland Athletics SP Jesse Chavez has a 5.04 ERA in his last nine starts after posting an ERA of 2.38 in his first eight starts. He is 0-1 with a 2.16 ERA in eight career outings (all in relief) against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who he faces Wednesday, July 29.
Fantasy Tip: Chavez ($6,400, 12.8% of cap) is a dangerous FantasyScore option today, as the Dodgers rank fifth in baseball with a .752 OPS against right-handed pitchers this season.
Tue, 28 Jul 2015 17:18:17 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Brooks was a key piece of the Ben Zobrist trade from Tuesday. He had appeared in just two games and pitched 4 1/3 innings this season for the Kansas City Royals. Brooks should be allowed to make a couple of starts before FantasyScore owners take the chance.
Tue, 28 Jul 2015 17:08:44 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Mujica has a 4.13 ERA through 28 1/3 innings on the season. Mujica doesn't have a save yet this season, but owners should add him now that he'll get regular opportunities.
Tue, 28 Jul 2015 11:48:26 -0700
Fantasy Tip: With Zobrist out of Oakland, Eric Sogard ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) figures to return to an everyday role at the keystone. Mark Canha ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) and Jake Smolinski ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) should be expected to see more at-bats in left field, as well. None of these players carries value beyond the deepest of mixed leagues, however.
Tue, 28 Jul 2015 10:53:48 -0700
Fantasy Tip: It seems like a foregone conclusion that Zobrist ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) will be dealt this week. His fantasy value is unlikely to change all that much, but a move out of Oakland and pitcher-friendly O.Co Coliseum can't be a bad thing.
Mon, 27 Jul 2015 17:41:40 -0700
Fantasy Tip: The Athletics bullpen could be a mess down the stretch, but whomever emerges as the closer could be a decent addition in AL-only fantasy play.
Mon, 27 Jul 2015 15:26:02 -0700
Fantasy Tip: With Clippard out of the picture in Oakland, Edward Mujica is the speculative favorite to pitch the ninth inning, but Drew Pomeranz could also be in the mix if he's moved back to a relief role. Fernando Rodriguez probably has the best skill set to pitch the ninth, but it's unclear if he'll be in the mix. Mujica has the experience over the others, but the A's could also use a committee approach from here on out. Target Mujica first if you're looking for saves, but expect this situation to be quite messy for fantasy owners.
Mon, 27 Jul 2015 15:12:45 -0700
Fantasy Tip: The A's have no reason to rush Crisp ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) back, and he's one setback away from retirement. Even when he's healthy, Crisp might have a tough time finding his way into the lineup in the second half with the emergence of leadoff man and center fielder Billy Burns. Crisp should only be stashed away in the deepest of leagues.
