Oakland Athletics news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Hahn had one of his best outings of an otherwise lackluster year, and if he happens to land a permanent spot in the rotation, he could be worth a flier in AL-only leagues.

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp (neck) was scratched from the starting lineup Sunday, July 24, because of neck soreness. OF Jake Smolinski will start in center field. 3B Danny Valencia will start in right field, while 1B Yonder Alonso will start at first base and is batting eighth against Tampa Bay Rays SP Blake Snell.
Fantasy Tip: Alonso is hitting only .220 with one home run and six RBI against left-handed pitchers this season and probably should be avoided in most leagues.

Fantasy Tip: With Stephen Vogt on the family emergency medical leave list, Maxwell is serving as the backup to McBride. He hit .321 with 10 home runs and 41 RBI in 60 games for Class AAA Nashville this season and has just one prior MLB at-bat entering play Sunday. He is not a recommended fantasy option Sunday due to his lack of a track record at the big-league level.

Fantasy Tip: Hill is a must-stash hurler given his 2.25 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 10.7 K/9. He's a ripe trade candidate, and a relocation to a better ball team should provide a fantasy boost for Hill.

Fantasy Tip: Graveman's lack of strikeouts limit his fantasy value to cavernous mixed and AL-only formats. For the season he has seven wins, a 4.15 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP with 70 punchouts over 110 2/3 innings. With 40 career starts, it's unlikely Graveman ever improves into much of a fantasy asset.

Fantasy Tip: Crisp is actually 4-for-8 (.500) lifetime off of lefty Drew Smyly, and he's a low-end option in DFS.

Fantasy Tip: Lowrie is hitting just .215 this month, but Drew Smyly has had a rough season. Lowrie has upside in DFS.

Oakland Athletics C/1B Stephen Vogt (personal) was placed on the family emergency medical leave list on Saturday, July 23. Oakland also transferred RP Fernando Rodriguez (lat) to the 60-day disabled list to clear room on the 40-man roster for C Bruce Maxwell, who was recalled from Class AAA Nashville in a corresponding move.
Fantasy Tip: Vogt will have to miss at least three days and no more than seven, meaning Maxwell and Matt McBride will likely share catching duties in the interim. Maxwell's stay figures to be brief since he has a left-handed bat just like Vogt, although the up-and-coming 25-year-old is slashing .321/.393/.539 with 10 homers with 41 RBI in 60 games with the Sounds.

Fantasy Tip: Since the All-Star break, Smolinski is 8-for-21 (.381) with a home run and four RBI. The team is looking to getting an extended at Smolinski down the stretch, and he's at least worth owning in all AL-only leagues.
Sat, 23 Jul 2016 00:28:40 -0700
Fantasy Tip: This was the third time in four starts that Manaea hasn't allowed a run, and despite incredibly winning just one of those games he has brought his ERA down from 7.62 on May 21 to 4.61 after tonight. There's a lot of upside in the young lefty, and he has done enough to be an interesting addition in deep mixed leagues.

Oakland Athletics 3B Danny Valencia, SS Marcus Semien and 1B Billy Butler are not in the starting lineup Friday, July 22. 3B Ryon Healy is at the hot corner and is batting eighth, while SS Arismendy Alcantara is playing shortstop and hitting ninth. OF Jake Smolinski is starting in center field again and is hitting sixth against Tampa Bay Rays SP Jake Odorizzi.
Fantasy Tip: Healy has seen regular at-bats since his call-up and is hitting .250 with a homer and six RBI in 24 at-bats, but he's merely short-term depth in AL leagues and a low-end deep sleeper pick in DFS. Alcantara has a very limited offensive profile and has no upside hitting low in the order. Smolinski is probably the most attractive of the trio in daily lineups as a value pick after homering last night.

Fantasy Tip: Gray has eight losses in his last nine decisions, a far cry from the pitcher that dominated for Oakland in the past few years. As hard as it is to say, Gray does not have fantasy value until he can figure out just exactly what happened.

Fantasy Tip: Hill doesn't look to be close to a return, and that can be a problem since the A's might want to trade him before the Aug. 1 deadline. He should remain universally stashed with his stellar 2.25 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 10.7 K/9, however. Stay tuned for more updates on his timeline for a return.
Thu, 21 Jul 2016 16:05:49 -0700
Fantasy Tip: It's just another spot start for Hahn, who has a 6.49 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and ugly 4.2 K/9 in seven starts for the A's in 2016. He could join the rotation permanently if Rich Hill is traded, but Hahn shouldn't be on anyone's radar outside of AL-only leagues as a shaky matchup play.

Oakland Athletics OF Coco Crisp and 1B Yonder Alonso are not in the starting lineup against Tampa Bay Rays left-handed SP Matt Moore Thursday, July 21. OF Jake Smolinski is starting in center field and is batting eighth, while 3B Ryon Healy draws in at third base and is hitting ninth. 3B Danny Valencia moves across the diamond to first base and SS Marcus Semien is batting leadoff.
Fantasy Tip: With a lefty on the bump, Crisp and Alonso are rested. Smolinski doesn't move the DFS needle much hitting that low in the order. He's a desperation stab. Healy has looked good so far but is untested and also has limited upside hitting ninth tonight. Both Valencia and Semien have good power and are nice value selections for daily gamers against the lefty.
