Phillies | Matt Harrison not close to returning

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 07:59:50 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies SP Matt Harrison (back) is not expected to be ready for the start of spring training camp and it appears unlikely that he will resume pitching anytime in the immediate future.

Fantasy Tip: Harrison has thrown just 44 innings at the major league level over the past three seasons and is not worth drafting in any fantasy format at this point.

Phillies | Ryan Howard might enter platoon

Tue, 19 Jan 2016 16:06:12 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard may be thrust into a platoon if he doesn't start hitting left-handed pitchers, according to manager Pete Mackanin. "I'm going to tell him, 'If you want to face lefties, you have to hit them better,'" he told reporters. "If you don't hit them better, I'm going to platoon. That's basically what we're looking at."

Fantasy Tip: No one can argue with Mackanin's logic, as Howard posted a dreadful .418 OPS opposite left-handers a season ago, which was the lowest for a Phillies hitter since 1914. Furthermore, Mackanin also can rely on Darin Ruf, who posted an NL-leading 1.107 OPS versus lefties. Howard is someone owners should avoid.

Phillies | J.P. Crawford rehab update

Thu, 14 Jan 2016 17:26:41 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies minor league SS J.P. Crawford (thumb) is at "100 percent" after suffering a thumb injury while playing in the Arizona Fall League, according to director of player development Joe Jordan.

Fantasy Tip: Crawford has been hitting for a while and is expected to participate in spring training camp with no limitations. He is ticketed to begin the year in the minors but is considered to be one of the top shortstop prospects in baseball, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him promoted at some point during the 2016 season. Owners in NL-only, deep mixed and dynasty leagues should keep tabs on him.

Phillies | Freddy Galvis avoids arbitration

Wed, 13 Jan 2016 17:19:16 -0800

The Philadelphia Phillies have avoided arbitration with SS Freddy Galvis by agreeing to a one-year deal worth $2 million.

Fantasy Tip: Galvis hit .263 with seven home runs, 50 RBIs and 10 steals in 151 games last year. He will enter the 2016 season as the Phils' starting shortstop, although he may eventually be moved to another position to accommodate prospect J.P. Crawford when he is ready for the majors. Galvis should be drafted in the middle rounds of NL-only leagues and the later rounds of deep mixed leagues.

Phillies | Ryan Howard files defamation suit

Wed, 06 Jan 2016 09:05:06 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard has filed a lawsuit against Al Jazeera, which reported that Howard, along with others, received shipments of performance-enhancing drugs. Howard claims the report contained false statements and was inaccurate, unsubstantiated and reckless in nature.

Fantasy Tip: Howard has fallen on hard times the last few seasons. He's hit around .220 the last two years and no longer has 30-homer power, even at hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park. He's always been a high strikeout guy, but a slower stick has cause him to make even less solid contact than before. At the right price later in mixed league drafts, Howard can be a power asset as a corner infielder, however.

Phillies | Two relievers joining Phillies

Thu, 17 Dec 2015 08:47:29 -0800

Free-agent RP Edward Mujica (Athletics) and RP Andrew Bailey (Yankees) signed minor league contracts with the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday, Dec. 17.

Fantasy Tip: The Phils' closer spot is wide open after the team dealt Ken Giles. Either of these right-handers could nail down the spot, if healthy, and serve as a nice third reliever in fantasy.

Phillies | Mark Appel dealt to Phils

Sat, 12 Dec 2015 12:30:47 -0800

Updating previous reports, the Philadelphia Phillies have traded RP Ken Giles and SS Jonathan Arauz to the Houston Astros, in exchange for Ps Mark Appel, Brett Oberholtzer, Vincent Velasquez, Harold Arauz and Thomas Eshelman.

Fantasy Tip: Appel, who was not included in the original version of the deal, is a 24-year-old right-hander who was selected with the first overall pick in the 2013 MLB draft, although he has not lived up to expectations thus far. He is 16-11 with a 5.12 ERA through 54 minor league games (53 starts) over three seasons, including a 5-2 record and 4.48 ERA in 12 starts for Class AAA Fresno in 2015. Appel has a decent shot of reaching the majors in 2016 and should be monitored in cavernous mixed and NL-only fantasy leagues. The revised deal does not include minor league OF Derek Fisher, who will remain part of the Astros' organization.

Phillies | Charlie Morton acquired by Philly

Sat, 12 Dec 2015 07:50:40 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates P Charlie Morton was acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies Saturday, Dec. 12, in exchange for P David Whitehead.

Fantasy Tip: Morton is coming off a season where he posted a 9-9 record with 4.81 ERA in 23 starts. Morton struggled in his final three games of the season when he allowed 17 runs in 10 1/3 innings. Morton probably will be limited to NL-only leagues and possibly deep mixed leagues in 2016.

Phillies | Ken Giles traded to Houston

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 18:53:59 -0800

The Philadelphia Phillies have traded RP Ken Giles to the Houston Astros, in exchange for SPs Brett Oberholtzer and Vincent Velasquez and OF Derek Fisher. The deal is pending a physical.

Fantasy Tip: Despite being only 25 and under club control through 2017, Giles was expendable because having a closer on a rebuilding team is considered a luxury. Oberholtzer is a 26-year-old left-hander who has gone 11-20 with a 3.94 ERA over parts of three major league seasons, including a 2-2 record with a 4.46 ERA in eight starts in 2015. Velasquez, a 23-year-old righty, went 1-1 with a 4.37 ERA in 19 games (seven starts) for Houston last year. Fisher, 22, hit .275 with 22 home runs, 87 RBIs and 31 steals in 123 games for two Class A teams in 2015. Oberholtzer and Velasquez have chances to make the Phils' rotation next spring, while Fisher is likely to begin the 2016 season with Class AA Reading.

Phillies | Ryan Howard heading towards a platoon?

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 13:47:41 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard could platoon at first base this season, according to manager Pete Mackanin. Mackanin said he is "50-50" and will decide after the holidays.

Fantasy Tip: Currently, Howard should be viewed as an endgame source of home runs and RBI in drafts. However, without a full-time gig, his stock would drop significantly. Darin Ruf killed lefties last season (1.107 OPS), though, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Howard and Ruf split duties at first base.

Phillies | PHI still looking at Jeff Francoeur

Thu, 26 Nov 2015 23:53:57 -0800

Free-agent OF Jeff Francoeur (Phillies) is still being looked at by the Philadelphia Phillies for part-time duty in the outfield.

Fantasy Tip: Francoeur likely won't earn a full-time job with an organization unless it really needs help. He is the type of guy you would pick as a "handcuff" selection in a draft. In other words, if you pick a Phillies outfielder then you could select Francoeur in the likelihood of an injury. Otherwise Francoeur has little fantasy value.

Phillies | Two teams looking at Ken Giles

Thu, 19 Nov 2015 09:43:16 -0800

Philadelphia Phillies RP Ken Giles is being checked out by the Houston Astros and Miami Marlins, according to sources. The Phillies could also wait to trade Giles until next July or next offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Giles is a young up-and-coming closer on a team that is rebuilding, so his fantasy value remains limited. But he has the skills to become extremely attractive if he's traded to a contending team. If he's dealt this winter, it's anyone's guess as to who would be the favorite to close for Philly in 2016. Luis Garcia and Jeanmar Gomez would be options for fantasy owners at the end of the closer picture in drafts.

Phillies | Jeremy Hellickson acquired from ARI

Sat, 14 Nov 2015 12:57:04 -0800

Updating a previous report, the Philadelphia Phillies have acquired SP Jeremy Hellickson from the Arizona Diamondbacks, in exchange for minor league P Sam McWilliams.

Fantasy Tip: Assuming the Phillies make no other major starting pitching moves this offseason, Hellickson is expected to be one of the team's top three starters entering 2016, along with Aaron Nola and Jerad Eickhoff. He went 9-12 with a 4.62 ERA in 27 starts for Arizona in 2015 and is expected to fill the veteran innings-eater role with the Phils, although he could be traded to a contender if he gets off to a strong start. Hellickson could be of interest to fantasy owners in NL-only and deep mixed leagues.

Phillies | PHI interested in Jeremy Hellickson

Sat, 14 Nov 2015 12:09:38 -0800

The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly working on a trade to acquire SP Jeremy Hellickson from the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to multiple sources.

Fantasy Tip: Hellickson went 9-12 with a 4.62 ERA in 27 starts for Arizona last season, with 121 strikeouts over 146 innings. The Phillies are in the market for veteran starting pitching depth and the 28-year-old right-hander would certainly fit the mold of an innings-eater. However, he doesn't project to be much more than a back-of-the-rotation guy for NL-only and deep mixed fantasy leagues.

Phillies | Phils' price tag is high for Ken Giles

Thu, 12 Nov 2015 18:27:54 -0800

An unnamed club recently expressed interest in trading for Philadelphia Phillies CL Ken Giles but Philadelphia asked for three "prime" players in return.

Fantasy Tip: Giles went 6-3 with a 1.80 ERA and 15 saves in 69 relief appearances last season, with 87 strikeouts in 70 innings. Even though the Phils are a far cry from being a contender, expect them to hold on to the 25-year-old right-hander while he is both affordable and effective. He should be available to be selected once the high-profile closers come off the draft board.
