Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen (lower body) said he felt good Tuesday, March 24, after appearing in his first spring training game in 12 days. He is not concerned with being ready for opening day, and neither is manager Clint Hurdle. McCutchen reaffirmed he would have been in the lineup if it was the regular season, too.
Fantasy Tip: McCutchen ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) is an early first-round selection in all fantasy formats, and one of the true five-category contributors. The Pirates open the season against the Cincinnati Reds at hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park, so Cutch should be on your radar for FantasyScore contests, especially if he finishes the spring strong.

Fantasy Tip: Cutch is a first-round lock because of his ability to contribute across all fantasy categories, as he has averaged 95 runs, 23 home runs, 82 RBI, 24 stolen bases and a .301/.389/.502 slash line over the past five seasons. McCutchen ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) is worth considering for FantasyScore contests in his first series of the season against the Cincinnati Reds at hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park, too.

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez and hitting coach Jeff Branson are experimenting with a mechanical adjustment designed to relax his swing. As Alvarez awaits pitches, he rests his bat on his left shoulder before lifting it into a hitting position. For the majority of his career, Alvarez held his hands in a position parallel to but several inches away from his left shoulder before triggering his swing. Alvarez went 3-for-4 with three extra-base hits and three RBIs Friday, March 20.
Fantasy Tip: Alvarez has moved across the diamond to first base this year, but he'll still be eligible at third base in most traditional leagues. On FantasyScore, he checks in at $4,300 (8.6% of your cap), which is a good price if his success translates into the season.

Fantasy Tip: Kang has struggled this spring with only three hits in 10 games and likely will begin the season as a bench player. Kang could be a later round pick in deeper mixed leagues since he does have power potential but may not see regular playing time.

Fantasy Tip: Tabata isn't on the 40-man roster and hit just .282 last year in 186 plate appearances. As it is, Tabata carries minimal fantasy value now, so a change of scenery may be just what the doctor ordered.

Fantasy Tip: It's uncertain how much time Tabata will be forced to miss, but he is likely to be a reserve outfielder if he evens makes the roster.

Fantasy Tip: Kang isn't doing a lot offensively, and that means he likely will not unseat Jordy Mercer for the starting shortstop spot. However, if he is able to learn a few different positions he might find his way into the lineup a little more.

Fantasy Tip: McCutchen still has a few weeks before the regular season starts, so owners should not be worried at this point. McCutchen can help owners in most of the offensive categories and should be selected in the first round of all drafts.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano is a year removed from a career year in 2013 in which he went 16-8 with a 3.02 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 163 strikeouts in 26 starts. With this left-hander, you have to take the often shaky control with the high strikeout numbers. For Liriano's consistent 9.0 K/9, he's worth a middle-rounds pick.

Fantasy Tip: Cutch is one of the top outfielders and a surefire first-round pick in mixed leagues. The team is being cautious, and it doesn't appear to be serious.
