Pittsburgh Pirates news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: After struggling in his two previous starts, Taillon pitched out of some early trouble and then cruised to his second career win. The former No. 2 overall pick has great control and has already proven capable of shutting down major-league lineups. Given his upside, Taillon is a viable stash candidate in standard leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez has hit safely in seven of his last eight games (8-for-19) with five runs scored and eight RBI during that stretch. Even with a mini hot streak, Rodriguez is an NL-only option.

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso is not in the starting lineup against Seattle Mariners left-handed SP Wade Miley Wednesday, June 29. 3B David Freese starts at first base and is batting cleanup. Also, SS Jordy Mercer is moved up to the leadoff spot.
Fantasy Tip: Jaso usually sits versus southpaws, so don't read too much into it. Miley is returning from the DL for the start, so Freese and Mercer definitely have appeal in daily formats tonight. Freese has a prime opportunity to stuff the stat sheet hitting in the heart of the order, and he's done considerably better against lefties this year (.340/.407/.547 with two home runs).

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese allowed five runs - four earned - and nine hits over 4 2/3 innings in a loss Tuesday, June 28, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has lost four straight starts since starting the season 6-2, and his ERA has ballooned from 3.93 to 5.07 during the span.
Fantasy Tip: Niese has emerged as a fantasy must-start earlier this season, but over the past three weeks he has lost it. Avoid him in all but the deepest of NL-only fantasy leagues at this point.

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Jung Ho Kang and 2B Josh Harrison are not in the starting lineup against Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma Tuesday, June 28. 3B David Freese will start at third base and is batting sixth, while INF Adam Frazier will start at second base and is batting seventh.
Fantasy Tip: Freese has only four hits in his last eight games but is still hitting a solid .255 this month. He should be an attractive option in some daily fantasy leagues. Frazier has gone 3-for-6 since being recalled from the minor leagues but probably does not have much fantasy value outside NL-only leagues.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco (leg) will serve as the designated hitter against Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma Tuesday, June 28, and is batting second. OF Matt Joyce will start in right field and is batting fifth in the lineup.
Fantasy Tip: Polanco has been out of the lineup for each of the last four games but has been able to pinch hit in the last two. Polanco is hitting .296 with 10 home runs this season and is an attractive fantasy option if he is healthy. Joyce is hitting .286 with one home run and three RBI over the last seven days and can be a sleeper option in daily fantasy leagues.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (triceps) threw 35 pitches during a bullpen session Tuesday, June 28, and did not report any pain. He was able to throw all of his pitches during the session. Cole said he does not know what his next step will be.
Fantasy Tip: It appears that Cole is making steady progress in his recovery, but he probably will not be back until after the All-Star break. Owners should keep Cole on their bench until he is able to return.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (triceps) delivered pitches to a bullpen catcher in the outfield Monday, June 27, and the Pirates and pitching coach Ray Searage are trying a new approach to rehab for their pitchers that involves more pitching and less throwing. "I feel like it's paying off in the bullpens because I'm repeating my delivery way better than I have in a while," Cole said. The idea is to help pitchers maintain their mechanics as they work back from injuries.
Fantasy Tip: At this point, don't expect Cole back before the All-Star break. He hasn't been great in 2016 but he's been solid for fantasy owners with a 2.77 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 7.2 K/9. Keep him stashed in all fantasy formats for now and stay tuned for an update on when he'll begin a rehab assignment.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco has done a better job of turning on hard stuff inside this year, as he's slugging .632 on fastballs on the inner third of the plate in 2016, compared to .372 in his first two years. "Because of the length of his levers, he has to work hard to stay short and compact through the ball, and to stay inside the ball," general manager Neal Huntington said. "As he's done that more consistently, he's been more successful."
Fantasy Tip: Polanco is having a breakout season with a .296/.375/.515 slash line, 10 home runs, 44 RBI and nine stolen bases. He can do a little bit of everything and at his age (24), he should be a high-end fantasy outfielder for years to come.

Fantasy Tip: Niese is sporting a 4.93 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and is fanning only 6.5 hitters per nine innings this year. Based on the way he's looked lately, you should be looking to avoid him in all fantasy formats on the road against the M's tomorrow night.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco (leg) came up as a pinch-hitter for the second straight game Monday, June 27, after not starting in the last four due to a left leg injury. He struck out in the ninth inning.
Fantasy Tip: Polanco's been having a strong third year in the big leagues, owning a .297/.377/.517 line in 71 ballgames to go with 10 homers, 44 RBI and nine stolen bases. Fortunately, this news points to him returning to the starting lineup much sooner than later.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano struggled again in a loss Monday, June 27, opposite the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 4 1/3 innings, Liriano yielded five runs (four earned) on four hits and five walks. He also struck out three.
Fantasy Tip: The veteran southpaw has really hit a rough patch as of late, as he's now given up at least four earned runs in five of his past six starts. The common denominator, unsurprisingly, has been walks, as he's issued at least three free passes in all of those outings as well. Liriano looks like he should be kept on the bench in most leagues right now until improvement is shown. At this rate, he could be dealt out of Pittsburgh in the next month if the Pirates continue to fade from contention.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco (leg) and 1B John Jaso are out of the lineup Monday, June 27. 1B David Freese is hitting second, and OF Sean Rodriguez is hitting seventh. SS Jordy Mercer (head) is back in there leading off after exiting the previous game due to a head ailment.
Fantasy Tip: Freese is having a solid .290-6-30 season, and he's a low-end option against Scott Kazmir. Mercer hits .315 off of lefties and is worth consideration in DFS as well. Rodriguez has struggled this month and isn't worth using today.
Mon, 27 Jun 2016 06:15:00 -0700
Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen will likely remain with the team through this season, but he could be shopped in the offseason. Top prospect OF Austin Meadows could be ready to start in center in 2017.
Fantasy Tip: McCutchen is in the midst of the worst year of his career with a .240-12-32 line. He only has stolen two bases in six attempts as well, and the 29-year-old appears to be losing at least one of those five tools. He has time to turn it around, and he's too good of a hitter not to. If you're going to buy low on him, do so without consideration that his stolen bases could return.
Mon, 27 Jun 2016 05:32:45 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Freese has put together one of his best seasons in recent memory and is easily one of the biggest steals of this year's free-agent market. He belongs in all fantasy lineups for the time being.
