Fantasy Tip: Cervelli was able to play in 130 games in 130 games last season and finished the season with a .295 average and 43 RBIs. He will receive a majority of the starts this season if he is healthy and should be a solid option in two-catcher leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Those pitchers have had solid seasons when in Pittsburgh, so the thinking is Niese could benefit from Searage's help. He is targeted as the No. 3 starter in Pittsburgh, so he will likely go in the middle of NL drafts and in later rounds in mixed leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Mercer will be the team's starting shortstop in 2016 and will not have to share the work with another player. He batted .244 with three home runs last season but could still be an option in NL-only leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon led the league with 51 saves last season and should be the team's closer again in 2016. Melancon probably should be middle-round option in most mixed leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Cervelli had a bit of a breakout in his first year starting with a .295-7-43 line. He'll be in that median starting catcher mix in fantasy.

Fantasy Tip: After a blazing first half of the 2013 season, Locke has regressed annually, and he shouldn't be viewed as anything more than a cavernous mixed and NL-only option. He has a career 4.16 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 6.6 K/9, after all.

Fantasy Tip: Niese fell victim to the Mets young dominant starters making the transition to the majors last year and finding immediate success. His strikeouts per nine innings dropped to under 6.0 last year, which will make him unattractive to most fantasy owners. However, he's an extreme ground-ball pitcher that could find success with Pittsburgh in a new opportunity. But he's more of a single-universe commodity to begin the year.

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jung Ho Kang (knee, leg) is progressing well during his rehab from surgery to repair damage to his left knee and a fractured leg and was able to jog, play long toss and lift weights with his upper body Monday, Jan. 11. General manager Neal Huntington is optimistic Kang will be ready to play in April.
Fantasy Tip: Kang's draft stock projects to peak and valley over the coming months with his return timeline still up in the air. He flashed nice upside with 15 home runs and a .287/.355/.461 slash line through 126 games during his rookie season, which is a nice offensive return for a middle infield. Stay tuned for updates, but don't sleep on Kang on draft day this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Feliz could be a low-end flyer that pays off if the Bucs trade Mark Melancon. Feliz has NL-only value in the interim.

Fantasy Tip: Masterson is recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder that prematurely ended his 2015 season, after he went 4-2 with a 5.61 ERA in 18 appearances (nine starts) for Boston. He is nothing more than a late-round flier at this point.

Updating a previous report, free-agent C/OF John Jaso (Rays) is expected to play first base after he agreed to a two-year, $8 million deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He'll make $4 million per year and can make an additional $1 million annually in performance bonuses. Jaso is expected to play first base.
Fantasy Tip: Jaso has some fantasy prowess if he's eligible at catcher in your league. However, he's an irrelevant first baseman and outfielder.
Wed, 23 Dec 2015 14:40:32 -0800
Fantasy Tip: Jaso has sneaky value in leagues using on-base percentage with a .373 mark over the past four seasons. Still, full-time at-bats may not be in the equation, and he hardly tips the scales across the other categories. Jaso is likely best left to NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues entering the 2016 season.

Fantasy Tip: Vogelsong owns a 4.63 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP and a 6.9 K/9 over the past three seasons, and he was bumped from the starting rotation in 2015. Entering his age-38 season, there isn't a lot to like about the veteran in fantasy circles. At best, he is a spot starter for Pittsburgh who could land in the right matchup to roll the dice on him as a streamer or FantasyScore flier.

Fantasy Tip: Rogers hit .296 (45-for-152) with four home runs and 16 RBI in just 86 games for Milwaukee last year. With more playing time, Rogers' average will surely come down, but he could approach 15 home runs. He's more contact-inclined than Morse, who struggled with a .231 average and just five homers with two teams in 2015. Both first basemen are merely corner infield depth in deep mixed and NL-only universes.

Fantasy Tip: It has been quite a fall from uber prospect grace for Webster. Webster will be 26 in February, so he still has time to be a post-hype boomer.
