Pittsburgh Pirates news, rumors and injuries
Sun, 26 Jul 2015 19:18:45 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Cole ($9,600, 19.2% of cap) has been strong all season, and he has a 2.40 ERA in four July starts. He is worth paying for at FantasyScore against just about any opponent.

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli is not in the starting lineup against Washington Nationals SP Joe Ross Sunday, July 26. C Chris Stewart will start at catcher and is batting eighth in the lineup.
Fantasy Tip: Cervelli ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) probably will return to the lineup in the next game or two. Stewart ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is hitting .291 in limited playing time this season, but owners on FantasyScore should be able to find better options to use.

Fantasy Tip: Marte ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) loses some luster moving from cleanup to No. 2 now that Aramis Ramirez is in town. He's having a good year, but pass on FantasyScore until his price comes down a bit.

Fantasy Tip: A-Ram ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) is hitless against Gio Gonzalez in his career and is oddly hitting .170 against lefties this year. Pass on FantasyScore today, but the move to this lineup could make him a bargain in the near future.

Fantasy Tip: Walker ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) had been in the two-hole most days, but with Aramis Ramirez coming aboard, Starling Marte is hitting second. Walker has a .318-4-14 line this month, but he might be too costly on FantasyScore so low in the order.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Corey Hart (knee, hip, shoulder) will take some time off and will begin another rehab assignment in August, according to manager Clint Hurdle. Hurdle said Hart will not see regular playing time during his next rehab assignment so the team could try to keep him healthy.
Fantasy Tip: It appears that Hart ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) will not be an option for the Pirates until September and probably would be used off the bench when he returns. Hart does not have much fantasy value and should be avoided by owners when he returns.

Fantasy Tip: The original timetable for Mercer ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) was six weeks, but it looks like there is a chance he could be back sooner. In the meantime, June Ho Kang ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) should make a solid cheaper option at FantasyScore against when he draws a advantageous matchup.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (neck) allowed one run on three hits and struck out 11 in six innings in a win over the Washington Nationals Thursday, July 23, after being scratched from his previous start with a neck injury.
Fantasy Tip: Liriano ($8,200, 16.4% of cap) lowered his ERA to 2.91, and he has allowed two runs or less in eight of his last 10 starts, including five straight. Unless he is facing one of the best offense in the league, don't hesitate to start him at FantasyScore.
Thu, 23 Jul 2015 16:13:33 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Ramirez ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) will need to do his part to help push the Pirates over the edge as a contender.
Thu, 23 Jul 2015 16:00:06 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Ramirez ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) should be given a couple of games to settle into his new role with the Pirates before being used on FantasyScore.
Thu, 23 Jul 2015 14:33:39 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Ramirez ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) played with the Pirates for parts of six seasons, but only three of them were at PNC Park. Still, there might not be as significant an adjustment period to his new surroundings. Ramirez projects, at best, as a low-end third baseman in all fantasy formats going forward. Make sure to avoid him at FantasyScore Thursday, too.
Thu, 23 Jul 2015 14:14:54 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Ramirez's ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) best days are in the rear-view mirror, but he still owns a serviceable bat, especially considering he likely won't be relied upon as a heart-of-the-order contributor. Still, he only tips the scales in deep mixed leagues. Ramirez currently sports a .247/.295/.430 slash line with 25 runs, 11 home runs and 42 RBI.

Fantasy Tip: Morton ($4,800; or 9.6% of cap) is sharp at home, posting a 4-1 record and 2.52 ERA in six outings. However, he should be avoided in FantasyScore when he is on the road, as he is 2-3 with a 7.82 ERA in five outings away from PNC Park.
Wed, 22 Jul 2015 22:13:11 -0700
Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli (wrist) missed a second straight game Wednesday, July 22, against the Kansas City Royals due to a right wrist contusion, but manager Clint Hurdle said Cervelli would likely return Thursday, July 23.
Fantasy Tip: Give Cervelli ($3,500; or 7.0% of cap) a game or two to return and prove his health before trusting him again in FantasyScore.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano (neck) passed all physical tests and was cleared to start against the Washington Nationals Thursday, July 23. He took an early flight back to Pittsburgh Wednesday, July 22.
Fantasy Tip: Liriano ($8,200, 16.4% of cap) has a 2.98 ERA, 3.09 FIP, 1.03 WHIP and 9.8 K/9 for the season but only five wins. He has done his part on the mound, but his offense has left him out to dry a lot. Given his health, FantasyScore players should view the lefty as a risky start Thursday. Although, the Washington lineup is riddled with injuries.
