Pirates | Jonathon Niese loses again

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 23:39:13 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese allowed five runs - four earned - and nine hits over 4 2/3 innings in a loss Tuesday, June 28, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has lost four straight starts since starting the season 6-2, and his ERA has ballooned from 3.93 to 5.07 during the span.

Fantasy Tip: Niese has emerged as a fantasy must-start earlier this season, but over the past three weeks he has lost it. Avoid him in all but the deepest of NL-only fantasy leagues at this point.

Pirates | Jung Ho Kang, Josh Harrison out

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 16:55:13 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Jung Ho Kang and 2B Josh Harrison are not in the starting lineup against Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma Tuesday, June 28. 3B David Freese will start at third base and is batting sixth, while INF Adam Frazier will start at second base and is batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Freese has only four hits in his last eight games but is still hitting a solid .255 this month. He should be an attractive option in some daily fantasy leagues. Frazier has gone 3-for-6 since being recalled from the minor leagues but probably does not have much fantasy value outside NL-only leagues.

Pirates | Gregory Polanco will be DH

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 16:35:05 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco (leg) will serve as the designated hitter against Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma Tuesday, June 28, and is batting second. OF Matt Joyce will start in right field and is batting fifth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Polanco has been out of the lineup for each of the last four games but has been able to pinch hit in the last two. Polanco is hitting .296 with 10 home runs this season and is an attractive fantasy option if he is healthy. Joyce is hitting .286 with one home run and three RBI over the last seven days and can be a sleeper option in daily fantasy leagues.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole throws Tuesday

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 16:33:00 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (triceps) threw 35 pitches during a bullpen session Tuesday, June 28, and did not report any pain. He was able to throw all of his pitches during the session. Cole said he does not know what his next step will be.

Fantasy Tip: It appears that Cole is making steady progress in his recovery, but he probably will not be back until after the All-Star break. Owners should keep Cole on their bench until he is able to return.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole rehabbing

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 16:01:52 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (triceps) delivered pitches to a bullpen catcher in the outfield Monday, June 27, and the Pirates and pitching coach Ray Searage are trying a new approach to rehab for their pitchers that involves more pitching and less throwing. "I feel like it's paying off in the bullpens because I'm repeating my delivery way better than I have in a while," Cole said. The idea is to help pitchers maintain their mechanics as they work back from injuries.

Fantasy Tip: At this point, don't expect Cole back before the All-Star break. He hasn't been great in 2016 but he's been solid for fantasy owners with a 2.77 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 7.2 K/9. Keep him stashed in all fantasy formats for now and stay tuned for an update on when he'll begin a rehab assignment.

Pirates | Gregory Polanco turning on pitches

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 10:02:20 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco has done a better job of turning on hard stuff inside this year, as he's slugging .632 on fastballs on the inner third of the plate in 2016, compared to .372 in his first two years. "Because of the length of his levers, he has to work hard to stay short and compact through the ball, and to stay inside the ball," general manager Neal Huntington said. "As he's done that more consistently, he's been more successful."

Fantasy Tip: Polanco is having a breakout season with a .296/.375/.515 slash line, 10 home runs, 44 RBI and nine stolen bases. He can do a little bit of everything and at his age (24), he should be a high-end fantasy outfielder for years to come.

Pirates | Jon Niese hasn't been good

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 16:57:05 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese has allowed four earned runs or more in three straight starts. He'll next start against the Seattle Mariners Tuesday, June 28, in Seattle.

Fantasy Tip: Niese is sporting a 4.93 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and is fanning only 6.5 hitters per nine innings this year. Based on the way he's looked lately, you should be looking to avoid him in all fantasy formats on the road against the M's tomorrow night.

Pirates | Gregory Polanco pinch hits again

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 16:20:37 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco (leg) came up as a pinch-hitter for the second straight game Monday, June 27, after not starting in the last four due to a left leg injury. He struck out in the ninth inning.

Fantasy Tip: Polanco's been having a strong third year in the big leagues, owning a .297/.377/.517 line in 71 ballgames to go with 10 homers, 44 RBI and nine stolen bases. Fortunately, this news points to him returning to the starting lineup much sooner than later.

Pirates | Francisco Liriano struggles again

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 15:49:10 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano struggled again in a loss Monday, June 27, opposite the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 4 1/3 innings, Liriano yielded five runs (four earned) on four hits and five walks. He also struck out three.

Fantasy Tip: The veteran southpaw has really hit a rough patch as of late, as he's now given up at least four earned runs in five of his past six starts. The common denominator, unsurprisingly, has been walks, as he's issued at least three free passes in all of those outings as well. Liriano looks like he should be kept on the bench in most leagues right now until improvement is shown. At this rate, he could be dealt out of Pittsburgh in the next month if the Pirates continue to fade from contention.

Pirates | Two Bucs out of the lineup

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 07:56:35 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco (leg) and 1B John Jaso are out of the lineup Monday, June 27. 1B David Freese is hitting second, and OF Sean Rodriguez is hitting seventh. SS Jordy Mercer (head) is back in there leading off after exiting the previous game due to a head ailment.

Fantasy Tip: Freese is having a solid .290-6-30 season, and he's a low-end option against Scott Kazmir. Mercer hits .315 off of lefties and is worth consideration in DFS as well. Rodriguez has struggled this month and isn't worth using today.

Pirates | Could Andrew McCutchen be traded?

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 06:15:00 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen will likely remain with the team through this season, but he could be shopped in the offseason. Top prospect OF Austin Meadows could be ready to start in center in 2017.

Fantasy Tip: McCutchen is in the midst of the worst year of his career with a .240-12-32 line. He only has stolen two bases in six attempts as well, and the 29-year-old appears to be losing at least one of those five tools. He has time to turn it around, and he's too good of a hitter not to. If you're going to buy low on him, do so without consideration that his stolen bases could return.

Pirates | David Freese hits three-run homer

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 05:32:45 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B David Freese hit a three-run homer Sunday, June 26, in a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Fantasy Tip: Freese has put together one of his best seasons in recent memory and is easily one of the biggest steals of this year's free-agent market. He belongs in all fantasy lineups for the time being.

Pirates | Chad Kuhl wins first start

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 05:27:38 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Chad Kuhl pitched five innings and was credited with the win Sunday, June 26, in a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Kuhl allowed three runs and four hits in five innings after getting called up from Class AAA Indianapolis before the game. Kuhl struck out five and walked four.

Fantasy Tip: Sure, Kuhl went 6-2 with a 2.58 ERA in 14 minor league starts, but no one gave him much of a chance pitching against Dodgers hurler Clayton Kershaw. That's baseball, however. Kuhl may have earned hmself a few more starts if this keeps up, or at least a spot in the rotation. Start him in DFS formats for now and pick him up in deeper NL and mixed formats.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole throws off mound

Sun, 26 Jun 2016 23:36:06 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole (triceps) threw 15 fastballs off a mound for the first time Sunday, June 26. He will throw a few more bullpen sessions on the upcoming road trip before the team lays out a rehab assignment schedule.

Fantasy Tip: Cole is likely to return sometime after the All-Star break. The team doesn't have a fifth starter right now, which could open a place for top prospect Tyler Glasnow for a spot start. He's worth speculating on in deeper leagues. Keep Cole stashed on the bench.

Pirates | Jordy Mercer removed from game

Sun, 26 Jun 2016 18:42:38 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer (head, ear) exited against the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday, June 26, with head and right ear discomfort.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like Mercer is dealing with some type of illness, so keep tabs on his status for the next few days.
