Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano picked up his first win since the opening game of the season Saturday, April 30, in a 5-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds. He held the Reds to five hits and struck out six while walking none after allowing 17 walks in his first four starts.
Fantasy Tip: Liriano closed out April the same way he opened it, but there are a few caution flags. If Liriano walks this many batters in the next few starts he could hit a slump. Still, all it has cost Liriano is one loss and a couple of no-decisions, He remains a strong pitcher in fantasy circles.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Juan Nicasio (3-2) allowed three hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings in a victory over the Cincinnati Reds Friday, April 29, with eight strikeouts. He improved to 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA in three starts at PNC Park this year.
Fantasy Tip: Nicasio has 29 strikeouts over 27 innings through his first five starts and is worth considering as an inexpensive flier option in daily fantasy leagues versus most opponents. However, he should not be viewed as a safe choice for his next scheduled start against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, May 4.

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jung Ho Kang (knee) has given the team good reports during his rehab assignment. "Jung Ho Kang is playing nine innings of third base at Triple-A," said Pirates head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk. "He continues to show physiologically good signs of recovery. He continues to meet the demands of the rehab. It's his second time he's gone back-to-back games."
Fantasy Tip: Kang's return will shake things up in the infield with David Freese, Jordy Mercer, Josh Harrison and John Jaso likely to see more days off. Kang, when he kicks off the rust, will be a daily consideration in DFS due to his power. Harrison will find his way into the lineup most days, but Mercer and Jaso are likely to be hurt the most.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Starling Marte is out of the lineup Thursday, April 28, with OF Matt Joyce hitting cleanup. C Francisco Cervelli also has the day off, which bumps 2B Josh Harrison up to fifth, and C Chris Stewart is hitting eighth.
Fantasy Tip: Joyce has a .333-2-7 line and is a solid plug-and-play in Coors Field against Tyler Chatwood. J-Hay is on fire and is a daily consideration. Stewart is a basement flyer because of the park.

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jung Ho Kang (knee) played in a minor-league rehab game for the second straight day Wednesday, April 27, for Class AAA Indianapolis. It is the second time in his rehab assignment that he has played back-to-back days.
Fantasy Tip: Kang is making his way back, and he is worth grabbing right now if he is available off the waiver wire. He has a ton of upside and power potential at middle infield and corner infield.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen smacked three home runs Tuesday, April 26, against the Colorado Rockies. It was the second time he has hit three homers in a game, and first time since Aug. 1, 2009.
Fantasy Tip: Cutch snapped out of a 3-for-23 slide in a big way. He remains a must-start fantasy option, even when he is in a funk, because he can break out at any moment.

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso is not in the starting lineup against Colorado Rockies left-handed SP Jorge De La Rosa Tuesday, April 26. 1B Jason Rogers is at first base and is hitting sixth. Also, SS Jordy Mercer moves up to the leadoff position.
Fantasy Tip: Rogers has a bit of power but has only four career long balls, and they all came last season. He's a desperation source of salary cap relief in DFS play. Mercer is more known for his glove but does carry a .300 early-season average. He's facing a pitcher that can yield plenty of hits, too, so he could be worth a sleeper selection tonight atop the order.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco (shoulder) is in the starting lineup against Colorado Rockies SP Chad Bettis Monday, April 25, even though he was dealing with shoulder discomfort Sunday, April 24.
Fantasy Tip: Polanco has recorded 11 hits and five RBI in his last eight games and should be a starting option in all mixed leagues.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen is not in the starting lineup against Colorado Rockies SP Chad Bettis Monday, April 25. OF Starling Marte will start in center field, while OF Matt Joyce will start in left field and is batting second in the lineup.
Fantasy Tip: Joyce has been used mostly as a pinch hitter this season but does have a .300 average over the first few weeks of the season. Joyce could be a desperation option in some daily fantasy leagues, but owners should be able to find better options in most leagues.

Pittsburgh Pirates RP Mark Melancon blew his first save of the year by allowing two hits (one home run) and two earned runs while striking out two in an inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks Sunday, April 24. The blown save snapped Melancon's streak of 18 consecutive saves.
Fantasy Tip: Melancon allowed a homer to Paul Goldschmidt, one of the best hitters in the game, so we can give the Pirates closer a pass here. He remains one of the more consistent fantasy closers out there.
Sun, 24 Apr 2016 20:04:29 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Marte is hitting .333, and he is currently on pace to approach 100 RBI, 100 runs and 40 steals. He is blossoming into an elite fantasy outfielder.

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso and 2B Josh Harrison are not in the lineup Sunday, April 24, against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Robbie Ray. SS Jordy Mercer will replace Jaso in the leadoff spot while 1B Jason Rogers will occupy first base and bat fifth. INF Sean Rodriguez will slide over to second base and hit sixth.
Fantasy Tip: It's a rest day for Jaso and Harrison, each of whom are hitting well over .300. Mercer is 8-for-15 with a homer in the four games he has played during the Pirates' 10-game West Coast road trip and is a sensible low-cost option in DFS. Rodriguez has homered in each of the first two games of this series and appears to be in the middle of one of his patented power binges, making him a fine short-term pickup.
Sun, 24 Apr 2016 05:54:24 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez is 7-for-17 to start the season with six runs, three home runs and nine RBI. His hot start could enter him into the conversation for a few more at-bats because he can start all over the diamond. In NL-only formats, Rodriguez could provide nice versatility as a depth piece, and you'll want to keep him in mind when he starts for daily contests.
Sun, 24 Apr 2016 05:48:06 -0700
Fantasy Tip: McCutchen is 10-for-58 through his past 15 games with an underwhelming eight runs, two home runs, four RBI, one stolen base and .172/.294/.328 slash line. The superstar will breakout of his funk, but at 29, it isn't out of the question to suggest his prime offensive years are behind him. Still, it is worth checking for a potential buy-low opportunity.
Sat, 23 Apr 2016 13:47:12 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Sean-Rod has been brilliant in limited playing time with a .429-2-8 line in 14 at-bats. He's worth a low-end flyer against Rubby De La Rosa.
