Pittsburgh Pirates news, rumors and injuries
Wed, 26 Aug 2015 21:06:27 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Locke ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) earned his first win since July 31, and had his longest outing since he tossed 7 2/3 innings against the Brewers July 19. He will make his next start against Milwaukee Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Wed, 26 Aug 2015 20:50:36 -0700
Fantasy Tip: McCutchen ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) is on pace to have the first 100-RBI season of his career. He has 85 RBIs through 122 games.

Fantasy Tip: Tucker was the 24th overall selection in this year's draft. His timetable for reaching the big leagues will now be pushed back at least a year, depending on how he recovers from the serious injury.
Wed, 26 Aug 2015 14:43:58 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Stewart ($1,700, 3.4% of cap) is strictly an option for FantasyScore users if you're in desperate need of salary cap relief. But his matchup tonight against a spot starter isn't the worst in the world.
Wed, 26 Aug 2015 14:41:34 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Stacking Pittsburgh hitters tonight is a good idea on FantasyScore tonight against Narveson. That could even ring true for Morse ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) as a deep sleeper despite a disappointing year.
Wed, 26 Aug 2015 14:30:23 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Harrison ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) has been quiet since his return from the DL, but this is the exact type of matchup that could get him going -- a soft-tossing, hittable lefty. Harrison has good marks against southpaws this year, too (.292/.356/.385).

Pittsburgh Pirates SP A.J. Burnett (elbow) is slated to throw a three-inning simulated game Sunday, Aug. 30. The Pirates will not use Burnett out of the bullpen when he's healthy enough to return from the disabled list.
Fantasy Tip: The veteran Burnett ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) was starting to fade before his injury, and one has to wonder how much he'll have left in the tank when he returns in what is his final season. He'll surely be a risky commodity on FantasyScore for however many starts he has left in him this year, but play the matchups.
Tue, 25 Aug 2015 11:53:13 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Mercer ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) is a defensive-minded player that shouldn't be relied on much on FantasyScore. He has just two home runs this year, and he's still a low-end option against the hittable lefty Hand.
Tue, 25 Aug 2015 11:50:29 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Harrison ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) is fresh off returning from the DL this week, so many daily gamers may be avoiding him. You shouldn't; Harrison has a slash line of .306/.371/.403 in 62 at-bats against lefties this year.
Tue, 25 Aug 2015 11:46:58 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Stacking Pirates hitters against Hand isn't a bad strategy today on FantasyScore. However, Morse, who has really struggled all year at the plate, will still be a deep sleeper pick. He's hitting .171 (6-for-35) with none of his four home runs against lefties this year.
Mon, 24 Aug 2015 13:58:53 -0700
Fantasy Tip: While it is encouraging news for Burnett ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) owners, the Pirates will be cautious with him, especially considering they're eyeing a deep playoff run. Burnett remains a viable stash option, but there isn't a guarantee he'll return and make a significant fantasy impact at the end of the season. Stay tuned for updates on Burnett's recovery and for an updated timetable.

Fantasy Tip: Reiterating a past tip, Ramirez ($3,800, 7.6% of cap), Josh Harrison ($4,100, 8.2% of cap), Jordy Mercer ($2,400, 4.8% of cap), Jung Ho Kang ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) and Neil Walker ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) project to rotate around the infield and receive semi-regular starts. It is a slight hit to all their fantasy value, but shouldn't be seen as a deal breaker for anyone except Mercer. It should also present value at FantasyScore, though, so check the Pirates lineup before locking in your own.

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Aramis Ramirez is not in the starting lineup Monday, Aug. 24. SS Jordy Mercer is starting at shortstop and batting eighth with SS Jung Ho Kang sliding over to play third base and bat fourth against Miami Marlins SP Tom Koehler Monday. 2B Josh Harrison is not in the starting lineup Monday, either.
Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Ramirez ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) and Harrison ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) in all fantasy formats Monday. Expect the Pirates to split up starts among their infielders, which slightly caps all their seasonal value. Mercer ($2,400, 4.8% of cap), Kang ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) and Neil Walker ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) will also receive some games off. For FantasyScore contests Monday, Kang is the more attractive shortstop option.
Mon, 24 Aug 2015 08:54:36 -0700
Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jung Ho Kang will continue to play even with SS Jordy Mercer back from the disabled list. Manager Clint Hurdle said Kang "need to play," and the manager will work Mercer into the lineup sometime soon. Kang is hitting .290 with 12 home runs and 45 RBI this year.
Fantasy Tip: Kang ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) really picked it up when Mercer went on the DL initially. He should be owned in all formats, and he could be shifted over to third base when the team faces a left-handed pitcher. Kang provides nice value on FantasyScore and intriguing power from the shortstop position.
Mon, 24 Aug 2015 01:10:27 -0700
Fantasy Tip: It has been a maddening season for Alvarez ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) and his owners. Alvarez had two errors to reach 18 for the year. Most leagues don't penalize for errors, but bad defense may lead to decreased playing time. The injury to Travis Ishikawa will help Alvarez a bit, but the fact the Pirates are asking Aramis Ramirez to learn first base only downgrades Alvarez's value.
