Fantasy Tip: Marte ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) is the total package, and his combination of power, speed and average make him a solid investment at FantasyScore most nights.

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli is out of the starting lineup Saturday, Aug. 1, against the Cincinnati Reds. C Chris Stewart will start and hit eighth in the order against RHP Raisel Iglesias.
Fantasy Tip: Stewart ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is hitting .293 against righties this season, and he'll be an excellent source of cap relief for FantasyScore owners not willing to pay up for a top-tier catcher.

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jung Ho Kang went 3-for-4 with three doubles, an RBI and two runs scored in a 5-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds Friday, July 31, and he has logged multiple hits in three of his last four games.
Fantasy Tip: Kang ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) is 8-for-15 with two homers, three doubles, three RBI and five runs scored in his last four games, and he has seven multi-hit efforts in his last 10 games. He is providing solid production at an affordable price at FantasyScore right now.

Fantasy Tip: Happ ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) should fare slightly better in the National League, but he is still nothing more than a streaming option in the majority of seasonal leagues. FantasyScore players should be extremely cautious with starting him, too. Over 20 starts this season, Happ has a 4.64 ERA, a 4.06 FIP, a 1.41 WHIP and a 6.8 K/9.

Fantasy Tip: Burnett's ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) velocity was down last start, and he was hammered for eight runs -- seven earned -- by the Reds Thursday, July 30. Newcomer J.A. Happ ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) could enter the starting rotation, but wait for an official announcement before making any hasty fantasy decisions. Check back for more details on the severity of Burnett's injury, too.

Fantasy Tip: Morse ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) projects to handle the right-handed hitting side of a first base platoon with Pedro Alvarez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap). Morse is a low-end FantasyScore option in his current form, but he has potential. Sean Rodriguez ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) won't receive many starts at first going forward.

Fantasy Tip: Melancon owners have nothing to fear as long as he continues to be successful in the closer role. He's earned plenty of rope this season, so it'd likely take a lot for the Pirates to bump him out of the role. Soria's fantasy value obviously takes a big hit. There's not much reason to hold onto him if he's not closing games.

Pittsburgh Pirates closer Mark Melancon is expected to remain the closer, following the acquisition of RP Joakim Soria from the Detroit Tigers Thursday, July 30. Soria and RP Tony Watson will serve as a setup duo.
Fantasy Tip: Melancon owns a measly 1.32 ERA, but he also a miniscule strikeout rate of just 6.23. Still, Melancon has racked up 32 saves for the season, and he'll likely continue to receive the majority of save opportunities. Soria owners should move on once an official decision is made by the Pirates.
Thu, 30 Jul 2015 15:21:49 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Soria has a 2.85 ERA and a 3.71 xFIP through 41.0 innings this season, with 23 saves. Soria and Mark Melancon will form a strong duo in the eighth and ninth innings for the Pirates, although Melancon should continue to receive the majority of save opportunities.
Thu, 30 Jul 2015 14:40:14 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Soria would lose the majority of his fantasy value with a swap to the Pirates, as it is unlikely he would receive save opportunities. Stay tuned for updates and don't make any hasty decisions until Soria is officially shipped from the Tigers.

Fantasy Tip: It is an interesting relegation. Walker ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) has eight runs, three home runs, nine RBI and a .273/.279/.485 slash line over his past 15 games, which is hardly production to turn your nose up at. Still, Walker's fantasy value takes a hit at FantasyScore, and if he sticks down at the bottom of the lineup, his year-long value is diminished, too.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano allowed three runs - two earned - while scattering 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings in a win Wednesday, July 29, against the Minnesota Twins, his original MLB team. He also struck out four and did not walk any batters.
Fantasy Tip: Liriano ($8,400, 16.8% of cap) is unbeaten in three decisions over his past six starts dating back to June 20, allowing two or fewer earned runs in each of the six outings. He is a solid FantasyScore option, especially when the matchup is a favorable one.

Fantasy Tip: Burnett ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) is a solid FantasyScore start opposite David Holmberg, who has been mostly overmatched in his previous two stints in the majors.
Wed, 29 Jul 2015 19:53:19 -0700
Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco (knee) was removed in the fourth inning of the game Wednesday, July 29, against the Minnesota Twins due to discomfort in his left knee. After the game, manager Clint Hurdle said the outfielder might have aggravated the injury tracking a fly ball Tuesday, July 28, so he was removed as a precaution.
Fantasy Tip: Polanco ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) should be avoided in FantasyScore Thursday in Cincinnati, as it wouldn't be surprising to see him get a day off just to regroup.

Fantasy Tip: Kang ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) apparently likes Target Field, as he swatted homers in each of the past two games there. He is a solid FantasyScore option lately, with multi-hit games in eight of his past 10 games. The power is an added bonus.
