Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen is striking out 23.3% of the time this season, which is nearly six points higher than his career average. "I'm a guy that has a good feel for the zone, and when I get good pitches to hit, normally I hit them. But more times than not lately, I've been getting them and I've been missing them. I'm getting to two strikes more and having to battle. When I'm on and I'm feeling good, I get a pitch to hit, I hit it," McCutchen said.
Fantasy Tip: McCutchen has a .289 batting average with four home runs and 12 RBI so far this season but has struck out 25 times in each of the first two months. McCutchen should still be a starting option in all fantasy leagues despite his struggles.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jameson Taillon recently skipped a start for Class AAA Indianapolis because the Pirates want keep him fresh for the end of the season when he may be pitching for the team. The team is also limiting SP Tyler Glasnow's work for the same reason.
Fantasy Tip: Taillon and Glasnow are expected to be recalled at some point this season and should have an impact in the starting rotation. Taillon may be the first prospect to be promoted, but both players will have fantasy value in deeper mixed leagues. Owners should add either pitcher they have roster space.

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso and OF Gregory Polanco are not in the starting lineup against Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez Sunday, May 29. 3B David Freese will start at first base and is batting third, while OF Matt Joyce will start in right field and is batting eighth.
Fantasy Tip: Freese has slowed down a bit recently but does have at least one hit in four of his last five games. He can be a starting option for desperate owners but probably can be avoided in most leagues. Joyce has played well as a bench player this season but is a risky option because he has only nine at-bats against left-handed pitchers in 2016.

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli will serve as the designated hitter against Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez Sunday, May 29. C Chris Stewart will start at catcher and is batting ninth in the lineup.
Fantasy Tip: Cervelli is receiving a day off from the field but should still be a decent option in most leagues because he will receive his at-bats. Stewart has posted decent numbers in limited playing time but should be avoided in most fantasy leagues.

Pittsburgh Pirates 2B Josh Harrison (illness) is not in the starting lineup against Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez Sunday, May 29. 2B Sean Rodriguez will start at second base and is batting seventh in the lineup.
Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez has received several starts in the past week but is hitting only .200 over the last seven days. Owners in most leagues should be able to find better options to use in their lineups.

Fantasy Tip: Nicasio has now allowed 17 runs -- 2 unearned -- through 20 innings over his past four starts, and his time in the Pittsburgh rotation could be nearing an end. While he continues to pad the strikeout column (9.0 K/9 for the season), his fantasy value is dwindling. It isn't out of the question to move on in the majority of formats.

Fantasy Tip: Although Joyce had five hits May 16 and 17, he has just one hit in the past six games. Joyce doesn't have enough fantasy value to merit ripping up your lineup and inserting him.

Fantasy Tip: Harrison was sick earlier in the week, but this appears to be a normal night off. Harrison has a .538 average in the last week and is tearing the cover off the ball. Figueroa doesn't have a broad sample size to merit fantasy consideration and should be left off your lineup.

Fantasy Tip: This is a normal day off for Kang, who has a .412 batting average and .706 slugging percentage in the last week. Freese has a .288 average and six hits in his last four games. He's worth starting in all formats from DFS to annual, as Freese finds his way into the lineup pretty much every day.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese held the Texas Rangers to one run on seven hits over six innings of work on Friday, May 27. It was Niese's fourth quality start, and he moved his record on the year to 5-2.
Fantasy Tip: Ever since taking a pounding from the Chicago Cubs on May 3, Niese has been a different pitcher, allowing seven runs in 25 2/3 innings to lower his ERA from 5.94 to 4.42 and earning a pair of wins. He's definitely worth adding in larger mixed leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Freese has handled left-handed pitchers well with a .272/.351/.457 slash line dating back to the beginning of the 2014 season and is a potential value play in daily contests Friday, especially hitting in the heart of the lineup. Freese has lost a lot of fantasy value since Jung Ho Kang has returned from the disabled list, though, as Freese has received just 44 plate appearances over eight starts. Freese should be left to cavernous mixed and NL-only formats going forward.

Fantasy Tip: Mercer won't help in the power or speed categories, but he is reaching base at a .377 clip this season and has a .395 on-base percentage against left-handed hurlers this season. Still, Mercer is nothing more than a low-priced flier in daily contests Friday, and a low-end option in cavernous mixed and NL-only seasonal leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez owns a respectable .752 OPS against left-handed pitchers dating back to the beginning of last season, which makes him a potential against-the-grain flier in daily contests Friday. Just keep your expectations in check. In seasonal leagues, he is a low-end option in cavernous mixed and NL-only setups.

Fantasy Tip: This should indicate Harrison is very close to returning to the starting lineup, and perhaps he'll be back in there for the club's next game, if not by the end of the weekend. He's been having a strong season, batting .319 with 25 RBI -- his most runs driven in this early in the season.

Fantasy Tip: This was one of Kang's best games since making his season debut a few weeks ago, so hopefully this is a sign he's heating up for an extended period much like he did all throughout last summer. In 16 games, the South Korean import is hitting .298 with five home runs and 14 RBI.
