Pittsburgh Pirates 3B David Freese could see time at second base and first base with 3B/SS Jung Ho Kang (knee) close to returning from the disabled list, according to manager Clint Hurdle. Hurdle noted he would "have to create" opportunities for playing time for Freese.
Fantasy Tip: Freese has an impressive .376 on-base percentage to start the season with 15 runs. His nine RBI and .388 slugging percentage leave a lot to be desired, though, especially since he has primarily hit third in the lineup. However, Freese's fantasy value is set to take a major hit, as he is likely looking at semi-regular at-bats -- at best -- with Kang back in the mix. Freese is likely best left to deep mixed and NL-only formats.

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jung Ho Kang (knee) could be activated from the disabled list and make his season debut during the series against the St. Louis Cardinals beginning Friday, May 6. 1B Jason Rogers was optioned to Class AAA Indianapolis, and a corresponding move has not yet been announced.
Fantasy Tip: A return Friday would fit the original timeline for Kang's season debut, and without a corresponding move to Rogers' demotion, Kang is likely to suit up this weekend. Kang should be owned in all seasonal leagues after posting a .315/.378/.553 slash line with 38 runs, 11 home runs and 33 RBI over his final 60 games of 2015.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco has shortened up his swing this year and has dramatically increased his walk rate from 8.4 to 15.3% this year and has also decreased his strikeout rate from 18.6 to 13.6%.
Fantasy Tip: Polanco, still just 24, is primed to hit for double-digit home runs for the first time in his career in 2016. Combine that with better plate discipline and his 30-stolen base potential and you have a young emerging talent that is a fine cornerstone for any fantasy squad.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Matt Joyce hit his fourth home run of the season in a losing effort against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, May 4. Three of his four home runs have been of the pinch-hit variety this year. Joyce is hitting .371 on the year.
Fantasy Tip: What a difference a year makes. Joyce had an awful campaign in 2015 with the Angels (.174 in 247 at-bats) but has turned things around with his new club. Unfortunately for Joyce, he's a bench player in Pittsburgh unless an injury opens up more time in the outfield. For that reason his fantasy value lies mainly in daily formats when he enters the starting lineup.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Juan Nicasio allowed four runs -- one earned -- on eight hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings with just three strikeouts during the Pirates' 6-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, May 4.
Fantasy Tip: Nicasio was a victim of his pitch count escalating quickly, as he threw 102 pitches through those 4 1/3 innings. Nicasio was a preseason darling, and he has flashed some of the spring magic to start the year with a 3.16 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP and 32 strikeouts through 31 1/3 innings. However, he should be viewed as nothing more than an end-of-the-rotation arm for you fantasy roster.

Fantasy Tip: Mercer is hitting .319 with 13 RBI thus far, and he's worth midrange consideration against Jon Lester. Rodriguez has a .342-4-14 line on the season and is worth lower-middle DFS consideration.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jon Niese allowed six earned runs, nine hits and five walks with just three strikeouts over five innings in a loss Tuesday, May 3, against the Chicago Cubs, his first setback of the season.
Fantasy Tip: Niese started out 3-0 with a 4.24 ERA over his first four starts, but he is 0-1 with a 9.90 ERA over his past two outings. He received an average of 7.0 runs of support in his first five games, helping to keep his unblemished record intact, but he was exposed a bit Tuesday. He is more of an NL-only middle rotation fantasy option, but certainly avoid him in mixed play.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Starling Marte and 2B Josh Harrison are not in the starting lineup Tuesday, May 3. OF Matt Joyce is starting in right field and hitting cleanup, while 1B Sean Rodriguez is at the keystone and is batting seventh against Chicago Cubs SP Jake Arrieta.
Fantasy Tip: Joyce and Rodriguez have been very productive as role players for the Bucs to start the year, but their daily fantasy stock is down tonight while facing the almighty Arrieta.

Fantasy Tip: There's a lot of talk about Tyler Glasnow, but Taillon could be ahead of him in the route to the majors. Stash him wherever you can.
Mon, 02 May 2016 23:37:37 -0700
Fantasy Tip: J-Hay is hitting .313 with 15 RBI and five steals. He should be owned just about everywhere and is a daily consideration in the upper-middle second basemen.
Sun, 01 May 2016 08:54:41 -0700
Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli and 3B David Freese are not in the starting lineup against Cincinnati Reds SP Tim Adleman Sunday, May 1. INF Sean Rodriguez will bat sixth and play the hot corner, while C Chris Stewart will bat eighth and start behind the plate.
Fantasy Tip: Stewart and Rodriguez should both be viewed as solid value plays in daily fantasy leagues this afternoon. Stewart is 5-for-18 with a double, home run and two RBI, while Rodriguez is batting .333 with two doubles, four home runs, 13 RBI in just 30 at-bats.
Sat, 30 Apr 2016 22:50:28 -0700
Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano picked up his first win since the opening game of the season Saturday, April 30, in a 5-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds. He held the Reds to five hits and struck out six while walking none after allowing 17 walks in his first four starts.
Fantasy Tip: Liriano closed out April the same way he opened it, but there are a few caution flags. If Liriano walks this many batters in the next few starts he could hit a slump. Still, all it has cost Liriano is one loss and a couple of no-decisions, He remains a strong pitcher in fantasy circles.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Juan Nicasio (3-2) allowed three hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings in a victory over the Cincinnati Reds Friday, April 29, with eight strikeouts. He improved to 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA in three starts at PNC Park this year.
Fantasy Tip: Nicasio has 29 strikeouts over 27 innings through his first five starts and is worth considering as an inexpensive flier option in daily fantasy leagues versus most opponents. However, he should not be viewed as a safe choice for his next scheduled start against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, May 4.
Thu, 28 Apr 2016 11:53:12 -0700
Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jung Ho Kang (knee) has given the team good reports during his rehab assignment. "Jung Ho Kang is playing nine innings of third base at Triple-A," said Pirates head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk. "He continues to show physiologically good signs of recovery. He continues to meet the demands of the rehab. It's his second time he's gone back-to-back games."
Fantasy Tip: Kang's return will shake things up in the infield with David Freese, Jordy Mercer, Josh Harrison and John Jaso likely to see more days off. Kang, when he kicks off the rust, will be a daily consideration in DFS due to his power. Harrison will find his way into the lineup most days, but Mercer and Jaso are likely to be hurt the most.
Thu, 28 Apr 2016 09:49:50 -0700
Pittsburgh Pirates OF Starling Marte is out of the lineup Thursday, April 28, with OF Matt Joyce hitting cleanup. C Francisco Cervelli also has the day off, which bumps 2B Josh Harrison up to fifth, and C Chris Stewart is hitting eighth.
Fantasy Tip: Joyce has a .333-2-7 line and is a solid plug-and-play in Coors Field against Tyler Chatwood. J-Hay is on fire and is a daily consideration. Stewart is a basement flyer because of the park.
