Pirates | Francisco Liriano sinks original team

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 19:55:07 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Francisco Liriano allowed three runs - two earned - while scattering 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings in a win Wednesday, July 29, against the Minnesota Twins, his original MLB team. He also struck out four and did not walk any batters.

Fantasy Tip: Liriano ($8,400, 16.8% of cap) is unbeaten in three decisions over his past six starts dating back to June 20, allowing two or fewer earned runs in each of the six outings. He is a solid FantasyScore option, especially when the matchup is a favorable one.

Pirates | A.J. Burnett on a roll

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 19:53:55 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP A.J. Burnett takes the ball Thursday, July 30, for a road start against the Cincinnati Reds. He is 6-1 over his past seven turns on the road.

Fantasy Tip: Burnett ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) is a solid FantasyScore start opposite David Holmberg, who has been mostly overmatched in his previous two stints in the majors.

Pirates | Gregory Polanco pulled as precaution

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 19:53:19 -0700

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco (knee) was removed in the fourth inning of the game Wednesday, July 29, against the Minnesota Twins due to discomfort in his left knee. After the game, manager Clint Hurdle said the outfielder might have aggravated the injury tracking a fly ball Tuesday, July 28, so he was removed as a precaution.

Fantasy Tip: Polanco ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) should be avoided in FantasyScore Thursday in Cincinnati, as it wouldn't be surprising to see him get a day off just to regroup.

Pirates | Jung Ho Kang dials long distance again

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 19:52:44 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jung Ho Kang went 3-for-5 with a solo home run Wednesday, July 29, against the Minnesota Twins.

Fantasy Tip: Kang ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) apparently likes Target Field, as he swatted homers in each of the past two games there. He is a solid FantasyScore option lately, with multi-hit games in eight of his past 10 games. The power is an added bonus.

Pirates | Tyler Glasnow promoted to Class AAA

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 14:52:13 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Tyler Glasnow was promoted to Class AAA Indianapolis Wednesday, July 29. He is expected to join the Pittsburgh rotation next season.

Fantasy Tip: Glasnow is the organization's No. 1 prospect and breezed through Class AA with a 2.43 ERA, a 0.95 WHIP and a 11.7 K/9 KP over 12 starts. There is a chance he receives a start or bullpen work when rosters expand in September, so keep tabs, especially in keeper/dynasty formats.

Pirates | Gregory Polanco leaves game

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 11:26:17 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco (knee) left the game early Wednesday, July 29, because of discomfort in left knee. OF Jaff Decker replaced him in right field.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to check after the game for an update in Polanco's ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) condition. Polanco could sit out a few games to allow the injury to heal, so owners may want to look at other options.

Pirates | Andrew McCutchen slumping

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 11:03:51 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen is 12-for-57 (.211) with 20 strikeouts since July 8.

Fantasy Tip: McCutchen ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) is still hitting .288 (101-for-351) with 13 home runs and 61 RBI, and he won't be this bad for the rest of the season. Continue to run with him in traditional leagues, but you may want to avoid him on FantasyScore until he comes alive again.

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 08:36:28 -0700

Pirates | Gregory Polanco on a hot streak

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 17:16:35 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco is batting .326 with seven extra base hits since July 12.

Fantasy Tip: Polanco ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) has struggled at times this season but has at least one hit in 12 of his last 13 games. Owners on FantasyScore could consider using Polanco in their lineup while he is on his hot streak.

Pirates | Starling Marte scratched

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 16:50:49 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Starling Marte (illness) has been scratched from the starting lineup Tuesday, July 28, because of an illness. OF Jaff Decker will start in left field and is batting ninth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should keep an eye out for an update on Marte ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) in the near future. Decker is not a strong starting in option in any fantasy league and should be avoided.

Pirates | Pedro Alvarez will be DH

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 16:33:15 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez will serve as the designated hitter against Minnesota Twins SP Mike Pelfrey Tuesday, July 28, and is batting seventh in the lineup. OF Travis Ishikawa will start at first base and is batting ninth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) is hitting only .190 this month but does have four home runs and 13 RBI during that span. Owners could use Alvarez in their lineup but could also look for better options. Ishikawa ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) has not done much since joining the Pirates and should not be an option on FantasyScore.

Pirates | Gerrit Cole wins again

Sun, 26 Jul 2015 19:18:45 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Gerrit Cole won his major league-leading 14th game Sunday, July 26, allowing one run on seven hits and striking out eighth in 7 2/3 innings against the Washington Nationals.

Fantasy Tip: Cole ($9,600, 19.2% of cap) has been strong all season, and he has a 2.40 ERA in four July starts. He is worth paying for at FantasyScore against just about any opponent.

Pirates | Francisco Cervelli on the bench

Sun, 26 Jul 2015 07:39:26 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli is not in the starting lineup against Washington Nationals SP Joe Ross Sunday, July 26. C Chris Stewart will start at catcher and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Cervelli ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) probably will return to the lineup in the next game or two. Stewart ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is hitting .291 in limited playing time this season, but owners on FantasyScore should be able to find better options to use.

Pirates | Starling Marte up to No. 2

Sat, 25 Jul 2015 13:41:12 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Starling Marte was bumped up to second in the order Saturday, July 25.

Fantasy Tip: Marte ($5,900, 11.8% of cap) loses some luster moving from cleanup to No. 2 now that Aramis Ramirez is in town. He's having a good year, but pass on FantasyScore until his price comes down a bit.

Pirates | Aramis Ramirez cleaning up

Sat, 25 Jul 2015 13:40:43 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Aramis Ramirez is hitting cleanup Saturday, July 25, in his Pirates debut.

Fantasy Tip: A-Ram ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) is hitless against Gio Gonzalez in his career and is oddly hitting .170 against lefties this year. Pass on FantasyScore today, but the move to this lineup could make him a bargain in the near future.
