Pittsburgh Pirates news, rumors and injuries

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen is signed through the 2017 season with a $14.75 million club option for 2018. His current six-year, $51.5 million contract makes him one of the best bargains in baseball. The Pirates have not approached him about an extension, but industry sources said if they decide to open talks, they are willing to go to great lengths to keep McCutchen in Pittsburgh.
Fantasy Tip: McCutchen is one of the best fantasy baseball players, and nearly unanimously a top-five pick. A lack of contract extension talks does nothing to diminish his standard yearly league value, and even a long-term contract extension keeping him in a pitcher-friendly home ballpark would do little to hurt his keeper league and dynasty league value.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Gregory Polanco added 12-15 pounds of muscle this offseason, and he feels rested and refreshed entering spring training. He opted out of playing in the Dominican Winter League to prepare and focus on the 2015 season.
Fantasy Tip: Like many young players in their first run through the league, Polanco looked overmatched, especially against left-handed pitching (.171/.222/.244 slash line). However, the top prospect will enter the 2015 season as a coveted breakout candidate in fantasy drafts. He projects as a five-category contributor in the long run and is worth targeting in the middle rounds on draft day.

Fantasy Tip: Alvarez has the kind of pop that will make him a consideration for your fantasy baseball teams in the later rounds of drafts, but you'll have to live with a low batting average. Perhaps the transition to first base will keep him in the lineup on a consistent basis.

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B Pedro Alvarez is easing into the transition from third to first base this year, and he's happy about the switch. Alvarez is expected to start at first base on opening day. "I feel very good about it. Very positive," Alvarez said. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to go out there and compete over there. I'm taking it day by day, taking in as much as I can to learn the position."
Fantasy Tip: Alvarez failed to reach 20 homers a year after smacking 36 round trippers in 2013. Now that he's unlikely to be a defensive liability, Alvarez could stick in the lineup more often. There's no denying that his power abilities will help you in the later rounds of a fantasy baseball draft, and having eligibility at third and first base is an added bonus. That's if you can live with his poor batting average.

Fantasy Tip: Locke has shown flashes of a solid fantasy pitcher, but he has yet to put it all together. He'll be a back-end rotation option in NL-only leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Morton will have solid back-end rotation value in NL-only leagues, but he's just on the watch list in mixed leagues.

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jung-Ho Kang, who hit .356 with 40 home runs in the Korean League last year, has "zero chance" of starting in the minors, according to general manager Neal Huntington. He'll be battling SSs Jordy Mercer and Sean Rodriguez for playing time, and Mercer has been serviceable and underrated defensively. Kang could, however, force Mercer into a utility role if he tears it up this spring.
Fantasy Tip: Kang's power is extremely intriguing at a position that lacks it. However, it'll be a mystery how that power translates to the major league level until games begin. If Kang has a good spring and cements a starting job, he'll definitely be worth a flier in the later rounds for his power hack.

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jung-Ho Kang reported to spring training Wednesday, Feb. 11, even though position players did not need to report for another two weeks. Kang said he has been working on adjusting to different things.
Fantasy Tip: Kang is expected to compete with Jordy Mercer for the shortstop job but likely will be used as a utility player if he loses the competition. It is not known how Kang will hit against MLB pitching, but he could be an option in one of the final rounds in deeper mixed and NL-only leagues because of his power potential.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jameson Taillon (elbow) said he is already throwing on a mound in the bullpen and feeling fine. He expects to start facing hitters in March, but likely won't be in a live game until extended spring training.
Fantasy Tip: Taillon is one of the team's top prospects, and he is making his way back from Tommy John surgery. Taillon doesn't expect to see game action until May, so it is uncertain if he'll make it to the majors in 2015 or not. Fantasy owners in standard leagues need not bother with him yet, but those in long-term keeper formats certainly want to add him to the bottom of draft boards.
