San Francisco Giants OF Angel Pagan (neck) did not hit Thursday, Feb. 26, because of a stiff neck, according to manager Bruce Bochy. However, the issue isn't believed to be serious, and it's unrelated to his back problems from last year.
Fantasy Tip: Pagan hasn't gone over 96 games in the last two seasons because of injuries. It's definitely not a good sign that he's already nicked up this early in spring, either. He's a brittle vet that doesn't inspire much confidence for owners looking for a steals option at the tail end of drafts.

Fantasy Tip: Cain struggled in 2014 but is trying to work his way back from some injuries and be ready for the start of the regular season. Owners should monitor his performance during the spring training, but he could be a consideration in the later rounds of mixed league drafts if he is healthy.

San Francisco Giants RP Sergio Romo's (shoulder, hand) shoulder is feeling better and should be fine even though his pitching hand was hit by a ball while he was running, according to manager Bruce Bochy.
Fantasy Tip: Romo could take a few days off to let things heal, but it looks like he should be fine for the regular season. He likely will start the season as a setup man but could be a closer option if Santiago Casilla struggles in the job. Owners could consider selecting Romo in one of the later rounds of mixed league drafts as a possible handcuff to Casilla.

Fantasy Tip: Casilla is a cheap saves gamble later in mixed drafts, but there's a good chance he'll be looking over his shoulder all year at Sergio Romo. In a best-case scenario, you would handcuff the two Gigantes relievers to each other.

Fantasy Tip: This will likely be Hudson's final year of his career. After posting his first losing record of his career last season, there's not much left in the tank for the 39-year-old. Bochy is likely being optimistic on Hudson's timetable. Hudson can be an innings-eater for fantasy squads, but his really only useful in NL-only leagues for now.

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Hudson (ankle), who is working his way back from surgery in early January to have bone spurs removed from his right ankle, is scheduled for his first spring mound session Wednesday, Feb. 25. Hudson is happy with his progress and said his ankle is feeling pretty good. Hudson said he's a bit behind but further along than he was last year in spring.
Fantasy Tip: A 39-year-old coming off surgery really shouldn't any fantasy baseball drafters. He also posted his first losing season last year and had an ERA of 3.57. Hudson can be an innings-eater during the year if he's healthy, but he's best left to the waiver wire in standard 12-team leagues for now.

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (elbow) threw another productive bullpen session Monday, Feb. 23, and is encouraged about his recovery from right elbow surgery. He tossed 30 pitches Monday and is throwing all of his pitches. "Letting it go," Cain said. "Today was 100%. Everything felt good. We're taking steps in the right way. The arm's feeling good and everything is going the right way. Now it's just getting the repetitions, getting on the mound a lot." C Buster Posey has also been impressed with how Cain has looked this spring.
Fantasy Tip: Cain is also recovering from an ankle surgery, and he'll be on injury watch this spring training. If he continues his optimistic road to recovery, he'll be an injury discount in the late rounds of standard 12-team mixed leagues to round out your rotation.

Fantasy Tip: This was expected to be the case all along. Casilla had a sparkling 1.70 ERA and 0.86 WHIP last year while recording 19 saves for the Gigantes last year. Sergio Romo, when healthy, is a threat to Casilla in the ninth, though, so it's best to handcuff the two if you can.

The San Francisco Giants reportedly offered SP James Shields a four-year, $80 million deal before he ended up signing with the San Diego Padres for four years and $75 million, according to multiple sources familiar with the negotiations.
Fantasy Tip: Shields is being counted on to serve as the ace of a much-improved Padres team and should see his numbers improve in a pitcher-friendly National League park. He will likely be selected in the early rounds of fantasy drafts due to his durability and walk-to-strikeout ratio.

San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner is expected to be the team's ace and opening day starter this year. Some are worried about Bumgarner's heavy workload in seasons past, as he threw 217 innings last year and 53 more in the postseason. This offseason, he didn't start throwing until January. Bumgarner's teammates aren't worried about his workload, either, citing "country strong" as he generates plenty of power from his legs and midsection while pitching. He also remains efficient, averaging 15.5 to 15.9 pitches per inning in each of his five seasons. Bumgarner has also improved his first-pitch-strike percentage, as well.
Fantasy Tip: Unlike a similar pitcher that regressed significantly last year after heavy workloads (Justin Verlander), Bumgarner is much younger at 25. He's also shown the ability to increase his workload drastically earlier in his career in the jump to the majors. Sure, there is some risk there, but until he shows us any differently, Bumgarner should be viewed as a top-tier fantasy ace.

Fantasy Tip: Romo is slated to open the 2015 season as the setup man to Santiago Casilla in SF. As a result, he won't get much fantasy love outside of serving as a handcuff to Casilla. Romo's sore shoulder isn't a good start to spring training.

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Hudson (ankle) is behind in his preseason preparation because of his right ankle surgery, according to manager Bruce Bochy. However, SPs Ryan Vogelsong or Gregorio Petit could step in for Hudson if needed.
Fantasy Tip: At Hudson's age (39), we wouldn't be surprised at all if he's not ready for the regular season. Vogelsong and Petit could easily be asked to take over for Hudson during the year, too, if he's not performing up to standards. Hudson should be left to the waiver wire in standard leagues.

San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum has all but been named the No. 5 starter by manager Bruce Bochy. SPs Ryan Vogelsong and Gregorio Petit will start the year in the bullpen, because Bochy prefers not to have a six-man rotation.
Fantasy Tip: Lincecum will likely open as the No. 5 starter, but that spot could be a revolving door between the three as the year progresses based on performance and rest needs. As a result, there's not much intrigue surrounding Lincecum in a standard 12-team league. He's more of a candidate for an NL-only pitching staff.

San Francisco Giants OF Norichika Aoki is the favorite to be the team's starting left fielder on opening day, but he'll be battling OFs Gregor Blanco, Travis Ishikawa and Juan Perez this spring. Aoki has just 144 strikeouts in the last three seasons combined. Blanco and Perez are probably slightly better defensive options than Aoki, though.
Fantasy Tip: As the favorite to start in left field, Aoki will have late mixed-round value in 12-team fantasy baseball leagues. His power has declined slightly in recent years, so you'll be getting a scrappy player that is mainly useful as a stolen-base and on-base percentage asset.
