San Francisco Giants news, rumors and injuries
Fri, 06 May 2016 15:19:03 -0700
San Francisco Giants OF Angel Pagan (hamstring) remains out of the starting lineup Friday, May 6. OF Gregor Blanco is starting in left field and is batting eighth against Colorado Rockies SP Chad Bettis.
Fantasy Tip: Pagan is in danger of missing the entire weekend series against the Rockies. Stay tuned for updates on his progress, but plan for the worst this weekend. Blanco isn't a bad replacement at all, and he's hitting .326 (14-for-43) as the fourth outfielder. The low lineup placement tonight limits his daily upside, but you could do much worse for an outfield value play.

Fantasy Tip: Good news for Giants fans. Get both Pence and Panik back into your starting lineups in traditional formats. However, in daily games, you may want to ease up and avoid paying up for them while coming off minor injuries.

Fantasy Tip: Romo isn't worth owning in many leagues and has likely fallen behind Hunter Strickland in the pecking order should Santiago Casilla falter.

Fantasy Tip: Kelby Tomlinson has done a fine job of filling in for Panik lately with three straight two-hit games, although all six hits have been singles. The Giants will be happy to get their regular second baseman back, as he provides a little bit more pop at the top of the order (three homers, 12 RBIs in 93 at-bats this season). He should be immediately inserted back in lineups Friday, assuming he doesn't suffer a setback.

Updating a previous story, San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (back) is being held out due to back tightness on Thursday, May 5, against the Colorado Rockies. He is expected to return to the lineup on Friday, May 6, versus the Rockies.
Fantasy Tip: After appearing in all 29 of his team's games, it's probably not the worst idea for manager Bruce Bochy to give him a rest anyway - back tightness or not. Pence needs to be removed from lineups Thursday, but it sounds as if he is safe to use for the weekend. He ranks fifth in the National League with 23 RBI at the moment.

Fantasy Tip: Panik hasn't played since April 29, and while there was a chance he would return in this game, it looks like the Giants are going to err on the side of caution. He should be back this weekend, though. In the meantime, Tomlinson will continue to hold down the fort at second base, but isn't a recommended option for daily games because of his limited ceiling.

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence (rest) is not in the starting lineup Thursday, May 5. OF Gregor Blanco is starting in his place in right field and batting eighth versus Colorado Rockies SP Chris Rusin.
Fantasy Tip: Pence has appeared in all 29 games for the Giants, so he's certainly deserving of a rest day. Blanco could potentially serve as a fine dart throw for daily owners, as he's got plus speed on the basepaths, and already has 12 hits in his first 39 at-bats, which is good for a cool .308 average. Unfortunately, though, he's batting ahead of the pitcher.

San Francisco Giants SP Jake Peavy surrendered seven runs and eight hits, including four home runs, in six innings in a loss to the Cincinnati Reds Wednesday, May 4. He struck out eight and walked one while raising his ERA to 9.00 in six starts. Peavy had been 7-0 with a 2.38 ERA in 12 career starts against the Reds. Peavy allowed three home runs in one inning in the game.
Fantasy Tip: It's clear Peavy isn't fooling anyone. The 34-year-old is nearing the end of his career and had allowed just two home runs in his previous five starts. He's allowed at least four earned runs in all but one of his starts, however. Peavy could be in danger of being ousted from San Fran's rotation if he keeps pitching like this. His ownership should be limited to NL-only universes.

San Francisco Giants 1B Brandon Belt said he made a mechanical adjustment this year that lets him see the pitch longer before he has to commit, and the result has been better plate discipline. Entering the day Wednesday, May 4, he was hitting .323 with a .434 on-base percentage and .982 OPS. He has more walks (22) than strikeouts (16). "I'm back to seeing the ball, not guessing," Belt said. "The results are not very good when I guess. For a few years I was just searching for something to hold on to. I think I've found it."
Fantasy Tip: The improved plate discipline and approach could very well lead to a breakout season for Belt. He's often teased with 30-homer power but hasn't been able to put it all together. With fewer K's and more consistent hard contact, Belt looks like he's headed toward being a top-10 fantasy first baseman.

San Francisco Giants 3B Matt Duffy, OF Angel Pagan (hamstring) and 2B Joe Panik (groin) are out of the lineup Wednesday, May 4. OF Gregor Blanco is hitting second, 3B Conor Gillaspie is hitting sixth and 2B Kelby Tomlinson hits eighth.
Fantasy Tip: Blanco is hitting .333 and is the only one of the trio that has some upside against Dan Straily today.
Wed, 04 May 2016 07:43:26 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Brown has a .258-3-8 line on the season and could be a low-end streamer against Dan Straily. Pence has a .290-5-23 line and has added luster in the three-hole. He's an upper-middle option in DFS today.

San Francisco Giants SP Jeff Samardzija churned out his best start with his new team Tuesday, May 3, against the Cincinnati Reds. He worked eight terrific innings, allowing just one run on three hits, one being a fifth-inning solo homer. He also registered nine strikeouts and two walks.
Fantasy Tip: Other than a couple of uneventful outings, Samardzija has actually been real good thus far in his first year with the Giants, as this is the third time in six tries he's pitched into the eighth inning or beyond. With today's performance, he now also carries a very solid 3.32 ERA. It seems Samardzija has put behind his disappointing 2015, which is great news for his owners.
Tue, 03 May 2016 17:10:09 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Panik has been out the past few games, but it looks like he'll be back very soon, and actually might return to the lineup on Wednesday. In the meantime, Kelby Tomlinson is taking his place at second base, though he's not a recommended option for daily formats with his low ceiling.
Tue, 03 May 2016 15:44:01 -0700
Fantasy Tip: The Gigantes are being cautious with the 33-year-old, but when he's ready to return he should slot back in as the eighth-inning setup man to Santiago Casilla. Casilla has had his problems in the ninth inning and could be on a short leash, so stash Romo now if he's available in deeper leagues if you're speculating on saves.
Tue, 03 May 2016 13:14:49 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Pagan should miss a couple more games, so stash him on your bench and activate him as you see fit when Pagan is healthy. For now, Blanco shouldn't carry too much fantasy value, and there is a chance newly-promoted OF Mac Williamson could even see some time.
