Giants | Angel Pagan out three days?

Mon, 02 May 2016 10:39:47 -0700

The San Francisco Giants are hoping that OF Angel Pagan (hamstring) will miss only three days after straining his hamstring Sunday, May 1. OF Mac Williamson was called up from Class AAA Sacramento to give the Giants more outfield depth.

Fantasy Tip: Pagan is off to a nice start to the year hitting ninth behind the pitcher, as he's hitting .315 (29-for-92) with two home runs and 13 RBI. In deeper mixed and NL-only leagues he provides nice batting average security and outfield depth, but he doesn't help all that much in the counting stats. While he's out this week, expect Gregor Blanco to get a short-term playing time boost in left field.

Giants | Angel Pagan strains hamstring

Sun, 01 May 2016 15:15:04 -0700

Updating a previous story, San Francisco Giants OF Angel Pagan (hamstring) was diagnosed with a strained hamstring following the game against the New York Mets on Sunday, May 1.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should expect Pagan to miss most of the Giants' next road series against the Cincinnati Reds. Gregor Blanco should fill in for him during his absence but should be left on bench or waiver wire in all but the deepest of fantasy leagues.

Giants | Joe Panik unlikely to play Monday

Sun, 01 May 2016 14:58:49 -0700

San Francisco Giants 2B Joe Panik (groin) won't be ready to play until Tuesday, May 3, at the earliest due to a groin injury, according to manager Bruce Bochy.

Fantasy Tip: Panik hasn't played since Friday and apparently won't go in Monday's opener against the Cincinnati Reds either, although it sounds like owners won't have to wait too much longer for him. Kelby Tomlinson should get another start Monday, but he isn't a recommended fantasy option.

Giants | Another three-RBI day for Hunter Pence

Sun, 01 May 2016 13:41:13 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence finished 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and three RBI against the New York Mets on Sunday, May 01.

Fantasy Tip: Pence also drove in three during Saturday's loss and finds himself among the National League leaders with 22 RBI after plating eight over the last four games. The 33-year-old entered Sunday with a career-high 14.8% walk rate, so he's seeing the ball pretty well right now. Keep him active in all leagues as the Giants to Great American Ball Park on Monday to visit the Cincinnati Reds.

Giants | Angel Pagan leaves with apparent injury

Sun, 01 May 2016 12:47:47 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Angel Pagan (undisclosed) was replaced by OF Gregor Blanco in the bottom of the seventh inning on Sunday, May 1, against the New York Mets after suffering an apparent injury while attempting to stretch a single into a double in the top of the inning.

Fantasy Tip: The Giants should release some more information about this injury shortly. Pagan entered Sunday batting .315 and tied for the team lead with 17 runs.

Giants | Matt Cain continues to struggle

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 22:41:00 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain dropped to 0-3 this season in a 6-5 loss to the New York Mets. He has now gone 12 starts without a win, dating back to July 22.

Fantasy Tip: Cain has a 7.00 earned run average. It's hard to believe this is the same pitcher who used to be such a solid hurler for San Francisco. For now, Cain's fantasy value is up in smoke and he needs to recapture that lost magic before fantasy owners will trust him again.

Giants | Joe Panik could miss a couple days

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 11:36:36 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Francisco Giants 2B Joe Panik (groin) will likely miss a game or two because of his groin injury, according to manager Bruce Bochy. Panik said he could pinch hit Saturday, April 30, though.

Fantasy Tip: Panik has been a solid hitter since entering the league with a career .305/.361/.427 slash line. He also has 17 runs, three home runs and 12 RBI through 103 plate appearances to start the season. Don't expect big numbers in the home run and stolen base columns, but Panik is a strong contributor in the other three standard categories. Stay tuned for updates as he works his way back to the starting lineup.

Giants | Joe Panik has minor groin injury

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 10:29:56 -0700

Updating a previous report, San Francisco Giants 2B Joe Panik (groin) is not in the starting lineup versus the New York Mets Saturday, April 30, after sustaining a groin injury during the ninth inning of the game Friday, April 29.

Fantasy Tip: Panik is being rested as a precautionary measure, so he is not expected to miss much playing time. INF Kelby Tomlinson will play the keystone position Saturday but should not be viewed as a great fantasy option.

Giants | Joe Panik out of lineup Saturday

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 10:07:28 -0700

San Francisco Giants 2B Joe Panik is not in the starting lineup against New York Mets SP Jacob deGrom Saturday, April 30. INF Kelby Tomlinson will bat eighth and play second base.

Fantasy Tip: Remove Panik from all fantasy lineups Saturday. Tomlinson has collected just three hits through his first 19 at-bats in 2016 and should only be used as a means of desperation cap relief in daily fantasy games.

Giants | Jake Peavy blasted at Citi Field

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 22:52:51 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Jake Peavy allowed six earned runs, four hits and five walks in just two innings in a loss Friday, April 29, against the New York Mets.

Fantasy Tip: Peavy's ERA ballooned to 8.61, and he has just one quality start in five outings so far. He is also 0-2 with an 18.00 ERA in two road outings. The good news is he has given up just two homers over 21 innings, but he has a 2.00 WHIP and he needs to become less hittable before he can be relied upon again in most fantasy formats.

Giants | Modest steak over for Hunter Pence

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 22:52:24 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Hunter Pence was hitless in four at-bats Friday, April 29, against the New York Mets to snap a six-game hitting streak.

Fantasy Tip: Pence is still hitting .400 (10-for-25) over the past seven games. Until these hitless performances become more frequent he remains a must-start fantasy option.

Giants | Sergio Romo playing catch

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 14:38:13 -0700

San Francisco Giants RP Sergio Romo (elbow) played catch from 60 feet Friday, April 29.

Fantasy Tip: The Giants are being careful with Romo, a relief pitcher who throws a lot of sliders. With him out, Hunter Strickland's role as a setup main has grown, but Santiago Casilla remains the closer in San Fran and has been strong so far this year. Casilla can be shaky, though, and Strickland should be handcuffed or picked up if you're looking for saves. There's no timetable for when Romo will return.

Giants | Denard Span feeling more comfortable

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 12:38:51 -0700

San Francisco Giants OF Denard Span (hip) said he feels more confident in his health and less restricted every day following his offseason hip surgery. After beginning the season with a .226 batting average and a .310 on-base percentage through the first 17 games of the season, Span has improved through his past five games with .253 and .344 marks, respectively.

Fantasy Tip: Span was limited to just 61 games in 2015, but dating back to 2014 he has returned a respectable .297/.357/.414 slash line with 45 stolen bases, including his three in 2016. He can be a strong contributor in runs, stolen bases and batting average, and setting the table for a strong lineup also helps his upside. Span should be owned in all fantasy formats.

Giants | Brandon Belt flirts with cycle Wednesday

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 17:10:54 -0700

San Francisco Giants 1B Brandon Belt went 3-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored in a victory over the San Diego Padres Wednesday, April 27. He was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

Fantasy Tip: After Wednesday's performance, Belt is batting .303 and is tied for sixth in the National League with 16 RBI. He should be viewed as a midrange first base option in both seasonal and daily fantasy formats.

Giants | Buster Posey being monitored

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 15:25:01 -0700

San Francisco Giants C Buster Posey sat out of the lineup Wednesday, April 27, in a day game following a night game despite hitting .440 (11-for-25) in his career against San Diego Padres SP Andrew Cashner. Manager Bruce Bochy said Posey will see more time off in the future to keep him fresh for the long haul. The Giants like C Trevor Brown both on offense and defense. Bochy said Posey is fine physically.

Fantasy Tip: While Posey's owners certainly would like him to play every day, they aren't complaining about the Giants' plan to keep him healthy and productive all year. While Posey is hitting only .264, he does have three home runs and seven RBI and continues to be an elite fantasy catcher.
