Seattle Mariners news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: It is Iannetta's turn to sit as part of a platoon with Clevenger, who carries no fantasy value with a .171 batting average this season. The Mariners' catching duo isn't lightning lineups on fire.

Fantasy Tip: Gutierrez is hitting .219-3-9 this season but is showing signs of warming up at the plate. He has a .385-2-4 mark in the past week, including a double. Is it worth inserting Gutierrez in your daily or annual lineup? Wait a bit and see if this warmup is longer-lasting before you act.

Fantasy Tip: It's bad timing for Martin, who was really swinging a hot bat, but it doesn't sound like a long-term injury. He should be held in all deep mixed and AL-only leagues. Those in standard mixed formats can base their decision on available bench space. With Martin out, look for Nori Aoki to fill in atop the lineup.

Seattle Mariners OF Nori Aoki is back in the leadoff spot against Minnesota Twins SP Pat Dean Friday, May 27, with OF Leonys Martin (hamstring) out. OF Stefen Romero was recalled from the minors and is starting in left field and hitting eighth.
Fantasy Tip: Martin could be out for a week to 10 days, so Aoki should continue to hit leadoff in the meantime. That boosts Aoki's fantasy value in all formats, but temper your expectations with Aoki providing zero power. He's hitting .242 with six RBI, 26 runs and two stolen bases. He doesn't move the needle much in daily games, especially while facing a lefty. Romero should be ignored everywhere.

Fantasy Tip: Lee has shown impressive power in a limited role for the Mariners this year (six home runs in 64 at-bats). Half of his long balls have come off lefties, too, so he's not a bad under-the-radar sleeper selection in daily formats tonight.

Fantasy Tip: Reiterating a previous tip, Marte is a low-end starting option in deep leagues because of his on-base prowess and modest speed. He has a .280/.333/.392 slash line with 46 runs, 31 RBI and 13 stolen bases through 414 career plate appearances.
Fri, 27 May 2016 15:23:52 -0700
Fantasy Tip: It's unknown if Seattle will place him on the DL. Martin has been a hot commodity of late off the waiver wire after hitting .320 (24-for-75) with five home runs, 10 RBI and six steals in May to raise his average on the season to .262. Keep him stashed everywhere for now. Franklin Gutierrez and Seth Smith figure to split time in right field while Martin is out.
Fri, 27 May 2016 15:20:22 -0700
Fantasy Tip: It's too bad, since Martin has been red-hot at the dish of late with a nine-game hitting streak (15-for-30, four home runs, seven RBI and one steal). He should've been added off the waiver wire already in all formats, and his value was even higher hitting leadoff with Ketel Marte hurt. Hopefully Martin is only out a few days at the most. Stay tuned.

Fantasy Tip: Marte is a viable low-end starting option at the 6 in deeper seasonal leagues. He has a career .280/.333/.392 slash line with 46 runs, 31 RBI and 13 stolen bases through 414 plate appearances. Stay tuned for updates, and look for Seattle to continue mixing and matchup at shortstop between Luis Sardinas and Shawn O'Malley. Neither have much fantasy value, though.

Fantasy Tip: Zych is a reliever to watch as he works his way back from the injury. He has electric stuff and struck out 19 batters through just 12 innings prior to the injury. Stay tuned.

Seattle Mariners 1B Adam Lind went 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double and six RBI in a 13-3 win over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday, May 25. It was Lind's third multi-RBI game in his last eight.
Fantasy Tip: It has been feast or famine for Lind recently, collecting four HRs and 13 RBI in his last eight games with all the production coming in three contests. In the other five he's 2-for-16. Considering most of 2016 has been straight famine for Lind, it has to be considered a step in the right direction. Still, his value remains confined to AL-only and optimistic deep mixed owners.

Seattle Mariners OF Leonys Martin (hamstring) was removed from the game on Wednesday, May 25, after stealing second base in the third inning. He remained in the game initially and came around to score but was replaced in the top of the fourth by OF Shawn O'Malley. Martin said it felt like a cramp in his hamstring, and he will be re-evaluated on Thursday.
Fantasy Tip: This is potentially unfortunate news for Martin, who has been on fire of late, going 15-for-30 with four home runs and seven RBI in his last nine games. His average has gone up 60 points in that time. As long as the injury isn't severe, Martin is a good player to pluck off the waiver wire.
Wed, 25 May 2016 13:28:27 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Sardinas could see some time at shortstop and split starts with Shawn O'Malley while Ketel Marte is on the disabled list. Sardinas has gone 13-for-32 with Tacoma, but he has a career .223/.265/.269 slash line through 257 plate appearances at the highest level, and he has no power. Neither Sardinas or O'Malley offer enough fantasy value to be considered anything more than desperation owns in all formats.

Seattle Mariners OF Leonys Martin, who already has a career-high nine home runs this year, has raised his hands in his setup at the plate, which helps him eliminate a trigger motion that caused him to have a long swing and inconsistent path to the ball. He has struck out more this year, but he's replaced that with more walks and more power. Martin's fly-ball rate has increased from 28% to 38%.
Fantasy Tip: With Martin's recent hot streak (.315-5-9 in May), he's been a popular waiver wire addition in the past week or so. If he's still available in your league, act now. His surge could earn him a move up the batting order, too, which would further increase his fantasy value. He can also run a bit, too, with seven steals on the year.

Seattle Mariners 2B Robinson Cano had three RBI Tuesday, May 24, and leads the majors with 42 RBI. He has reached safely in 23 consecutive games, hitting .344 (33-for-96) over that span with five homers, 10 doubles and 18 RBI.
Fantasy Tip: He's on pace for a .292-47-151 season and very much looks to be back to his old self. His home-road splits are pretty drastic, though. He has a .229-4-15 line at home and a .343-9-27 line on the road. It's safe to say he has the most DFS upside away from Safeco Field.
