Seattle Mariners OF Franklin Gutierrez (neck) was scratched from the starting lineup Sunday, July 24, because of a sore neck. He is expected to be fine for the series against the Pittsburgh Pirates starting Tuesday, July 26.
Fantasy Tip: Gutierrez should be fine moving forward, but owners should keep an eye on the situation. He is hitting .242 this season and can be an option for owners in daily fantasy leagues when he has a favorable matchup.

Seattle Mariners OF Seth Smith, 1B Adam Lind and INF Shawn O'Malley are not in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays SP J.A. Happ Sunday, July 24. OF Nelson Cruz will start in right field, while C Chris Iannetta will serve as the designated hitter and is batting second. 1B Dae-ho Lee will start at first base and is batting fifth. SS Luis Sardinas will start at shortstop and is batting ninth.
Fantasy Tip: Iannetta is hitting only .216 in limited playing time and is not a great fantasy option for most teams. Lee has gone hitless in his last 13 at-bats, and owners should be able to find better options to use in most leagues. Sardinas was recently called up and is hitting under .200 this season and should be avoided.

Fantasy Tip: Since falling to 6-6 with a 4.45 ERA after a road loss to the Detroit Tigers on June 22, Iwakuma is 5-0 with a 2.51 ERA since. He's lasted at least six innings in each turn and hasn't even logged 100 pitches in any outing over that stretch. Despite his recent success, Iwakuma will be hard-pressed to continue his win streak on the road against the Chicago Cubs on Friday.

Seattle Mariners OF Nelson Cruz connected on his 24th and 25th homers of the season in a 14-5 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday, July 23, belting his ninth career grand slam off SP R.A. Dickey in the third inning before connecting on a three-run blast off RP Drew Storen in the eighth.
Fantasy Tip: Cruz had not left the yard or driven in a run over his previous nine contests. Nevertheless, he is batting .302 in July, ranks fourth in the AL in home runs and tied for seventh in RBI (65) with teammate Kyle Seager. Cruz appears poised for his third consecutive 40-homer campaign and remains a must-start in all formats.

Fantasy Tip: Iannetta is hitting only .125 with one RBI this month and should be avoided in most fantasy leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton's performances and strikeout totals have been up and down all year. He is a decent option in AL-only formats and a high-risk, high-reward play in DFS games.

Seattle Mariners SS Ketel Marte (illness) was placed on the disabled list with mononucleosis Friday, July 22. In a corresponding move INF Luis Sardinas was recalled from Class AAA Tacoma. Manager Scott Service said Sardinas and SS Shawn O'Malley will split time at shortstop with Marte on the DL. Marte also does not have a return timeline yet.
Fantasy Tip: Marte can be replaced in the majority of seasonal leagues, and O'Malley and Sardinas aren't viable options outside of cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues. Stay tuned for updates, but this is likely a timeshare to avoid.

Fantasy Tip: Barney has been a nice story, and he owns some upside in daily contests batting in front of the best hitters on the team Friday. However, this is a player with no power or speed potential and likely overachieving given his career .250/.299/.345 slash line.
Thu, 21 Jul 2016 11:30:42 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Lind has some intrigue for his pop (15 home runs), but his .231/.264/.449 slash line doesn't endear him to many fantasy owners in mixed leagues, especially since he usually rests against southpaws. A trade to a better situation or hitter's park could slightly boost his value.

Seattle Mariners OF Leonys Martin went 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs and three RBIs Wednesday, July 20, against the Chicago White Sox. He is up to 13 homers, well past his previous high of eight hit in 457 at-bats with the Texas Rangers in 2013.
Fantasy Tip: Martin has exploded for fantasy owners this season, emerging as a surprising source of power. His .245 makes him slightly less attractive from a fantasy perspective in rotisserie formats, but he is a great DFS play, too.

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) allowed five earned runs, 10 hits and two walks with just two strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision Wednesday, July 20, against the Chicago White Sox. He threw 68 of his 94 pitches for strikes.
Fantasy Tip: Hernandez was noticeably rusty in the first inning, giving up three runs, but he settled down allowing two runs in his final 5 2/3 innings. He remains a must-start fantasy option in all leagues, and you can expect him to be much better in his next outing.

Fantasy Tip: Marte's illness is turning out to be more of an issue than initially thought, and as a result, Sardinas will get another opportunity at the big league level. However, with an unimpressive .222/.261/.273 slash line in 104 career games, the 23-year-old can safely be left on just about all waiver wires. He's very limited at the plate, especially in the power department.

The Seattle Mariners acquired C Dan Vogelbach and P Paul Blackburn from the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, July 20, in exchange for SP Mike Montgomery, according to a source. A Class AAA pitcher is also headed to the Cubs.
Fantasy Tip: Vogelbach was being eyed by multiple clubs this week, and he fits much better in the American League as a first baseman/DH type anyway. The lefty slugger was sporting a .972 OPS with 16 homers and 64 RBI at Class AAA Iowa and should be an attractive stash option for dynasty owners if they have the room. Montgomery, a lefty, had a decent run with Seattle as a starter this year and is versatile in a starting or relieving role. He could become a matchup play in deeper leagues later this year or in 2017 if he lands in a starting role for the Cubbies.
Wed, 20 Jul 2016 10:57:57 -0700
Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino is "going to get a chance to play a little, more than a one to two time a week scenario," according to manager Scott Servais. Zunino and C Chris Iannetta will split time.
Fantasy Tip: This is obviously bad news for Iannetta, who was really nothing more than a second backstop in two-catcher and AL-only leagues anyway. Zunino was hitting .286 with 17 home runs and 57 RBI for Class AAA Tacoma and has nice offensive upside for those in two-catcher and AL leagues. Snatch him up if you're in need.
Wed, 20 Jul 2016 10:38:50 -0700
Seattle Mariners SS Ketel Marte (illness) remains out of the starting lineup Wednesday, July 20. SS Shawn O'Malley is starting at shortstop again and is batting ninth against Chicago White Sox SP Miguel Gonzalez.
Fantasy Tip: Marte is dealing with a viral infection but could return to the lineup any day now. O'Malley has been filling in at the 6 but has very little offensive upside aside from some speed. He's only an asset in deep NL-only leagues and should be left alone in DFS today.
