Mariners | Wade LeBlanc dazzles in 2016 debut

Fri, 24 Jun 2016 23:04:30 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Wade LeBlanc allowed just three hits and a walk over six scoreless innings against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, June 24.

Fantasy Tip: LeBlanc, who last appeared in the majors on Sept. 28, 2014, was lights out against a tough Cardinals lineup in his M's debut. Despite that, it's hard to envision a scenario where LeBlanc remains in that position long term, especially with three members of the rotation currently out of action.

Mariners | Adam Lind hits walk-off home run

Fri, 24 Jun 2016 22:56:40 -0700

Seattle Mariners 1B Adam Lind hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, June 24, to give the M's a 4-3 win.

Fantasy Tip: Lind's power has been respectable recently -- five home runs in his last 11 games -- but the veteran continues to hit for a low average, particularly in June (9-for-53; .170). His power plays in AL-only circuits for sure, but his appeal doesn't extend much beyond that until he gets his average up.

Mariners | Adrian Sampson placed on DL

Fri, 24 Jun 2016 16:50:46 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Adrian Sampson (elbow) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, June 24, because of a right flexor bundle strain. The team also optioned RP Tom Wilhelmsen to Class AAA Tacoma. Ps Wade LeBlanc, Donn Roach and David Rollins were recalled from Class AAA Tacoma.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known who will take Sampson's spot in the starting rotation, but Taijuan Walker could return in the near future. Walker has a decent ERA despite his 3-6 record and should be used against favorable matchups.

Mariners | Nori Aoki sent down

Fri, 24 Jun 2016 16:29:54 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Nori Aoki was optioned to Class AAA Tacoma Friday, June 24.

Fantasy Tip: Nelson Cruz probably will receive regular playing time in the field with Aoki sent down. He should be a starter in all fantasy leagues. Dae-ho Lee should see more playing time at either first base or designated hitter. He is hitting .304 with three home runs and 11 RBI this month and should be a solid starting option in deeper mixed leagues.

Mariners | Nelson Cruz goes deep twice

Thu, 23 Jun 2016 16:58:19 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Nelson Cruz went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs Thursday, June 23, versus the Detroit Tigers. The homers produced his only runs scored and RBI of the contest.

Fantasy Tip: Unsurprisingly, Cruz is enjoying another stellar campaign in 2016, with a .285/.368/.526 line to go with his 18 long balls and 48 RBI. Being one of baseball's premier power hitters, just keep firing him up every time he's in the lineup.

Mariners | Adrian Sampson a late scratch

Thu, 23 Jun 2016 10:30:20 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Adrian Sampson (arm) felt something in his arm during warmups Thursday, June 23, and was scratched from his start. RP Vidal Nuno will make the emergency start against the Detroit Tigers.

Fantasy Tip: Sampson didn't have a lot of upside against the Tigers lineup, and Nuno is up against it as well. Pass on him in DFS.

Mariners | SEA shifts lineup for lefty

Thu, 23 Jun 2016 07:36:50 -0700

Seattle Mariners 1B Adam Lind, OF Nori Aoki and OF Seth Smith are out of the lineup Thursday, June 23. SS Ketel Marte is leading off, OF Franklin Gutierrez hits second and 1B Dae-ho Lee hits fifth. OF Leonys Martin moved down to the eighth spot.

Fantasy Tip: Marte is hitting .290 with one RBI this month. He doesn't do much past hitting singles, but he has upside at leadoff against Daniel Norris. Gutierrez has a .298-6-18 line in 84 at-bats against lefties, and he's a low-end option. Lee has a .327-3-11 line this month, and he pounds lefties. He's a solid option today. Martin had that binge earlier this year before he got hurt, but his upside is limited against lefties. He's a low-end consideration today.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma hit hard in loss

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 20:21:41 -0700

Settle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma allowed five earned runs, 11 hits and three walks with five strikeouts in just 4 2/3 innings in a loss Wednesday, June 22, against the Detroit Tigers to drop to 6-6. His ERA also ballooned from 4.18 to 4.45.

Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma had been receiving pretty solid run support recently, which masked his problems a bit. He has allowed at least three earned runs in eight of his past nine outings, but he has also picked up seven or more runs of support in six of the past eight starts. He remains a decent play in most fantasy formats for his strikeout potential, but he has really tailed off in the ERA department.

Mariners | Taijuan Walker likely starting next week

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 14:20:36 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Taijuan Walker (foot) is expected to start against the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday, June 28, or Wednesday, June 29.

Fantasy Tip: Given his inconsistency at full health, it is likely best to take a wait-and-see approach with Walker next week. He has tremendous upside, but cannot shake the rough outings and should be viewed as a high-risk, high-reward option in all fantasy formats until he proves otherwise.

Mariners | Felix Hernandez throwing from 75 feet

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 14:14:40 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (calf) threw from 75 feet for seven to eight minutes Wednesday, June 22, and he is doing workouts, according to manager Scott Servais.

Fantasy Tip: Continue to stash Hernandez in all fantasy leagues, but know you might not receive ace returns when he's finally back after the All-Star break. Stay tuned for updates as he works his way back.

Mariners | Tom Wilhelmsen joins Mariners

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 06:52:20 -0700

Free-agent RP Tom Wilhelmsen (Rangers) signed a one-year deal with the Seattle Mariners Tuesday, June 21.

Fantasy Tip: Wilhelmsen had an eventful stay with the Rangers, but he could be worth grabbing in AL-only leagues for ratios and K's.

Mariners | James Paxton fizzles in Motown

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 19:29:29 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton allowed four earned runs, 11 hits and three walks with five strikeouts in a loss Tuesday, June 21, against the Detroit Tigers. Paxton was cruising along until the sixth inning, and then he fell apart in the eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton was pitching pretty well, even until the eighth-inning rally, hitting 98 mph on the radar gun. He just ran out of gas as the Tigers pieced together a few hits and loaded the bases with none out. He has pitched well since returning, and has emerged as a must-start in all AL-only leagues and deeper mixed formats.

Mariners | Kyle Seager enjoying Comerica Park

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 19:28:36 -0700

Seattle Mariners 3B Kyle Seager went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run off of Detroit Tigers SP Justin Verlander in the game Tuesday, June 21. It was his second home run in as many nights at Comerica Park.

Fantasy Tip: Seager is very consistent, as he had five homers in April, five in May and he is up to five in the month of June with some time remaining. He started out slowly with the average this season, but he has settled in nicely and re-emerged as a must-start fantasy option across most formats.

Mariners | Taijuan Walker to miss next start

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 16:55:01 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Taijuan Walker (foot) will not be able to pitch against the St. Louis Cardinals Friday, June 24, but will not need to be placed on the disabled list, according to general manager Jerry Dipoto.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation to see when Walker will be able to start again and who will take his place for Friday's start. Owners should keep Walker on the bench until he is able to return.

Mariners | Taijuan Walker has tendinitis

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 16:26:09 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Taijuan Walker (foot) has been diagnosed with tendinitis in his foot. Manager Scott Servais said Walker's foot is still tender.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need monitor the situation because there is a chance that Walker may need to be placed on the 15-day disabled list. The team could call Cody Martin from Class AAA Tacoma if Walker is not able to make his next season but will not be a strong fantasy option.
