Mariners | Steve Clevenger acquired by Seattle

Tue, 01 Dec 2015 17:36:02 -0800

The Seattle Mariners acquired C Steve Clevenger in a trade that sent OF Mark Trumbo to the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Fantasy Tip: Clevenger hit .287 in 101 at-bats for Baltimore last year, but the 29-year-old owns a .228 average over 416 at-bats for his career. He offers little in the way of upside, and there is no guarantee he will see regular playing time for Seattle.

Mariners | Mark Trumbo could be dealt to Baltimore

Tue, 01 Dec 2015 17:21:31 -0800

Seattle Mariners OF Mark Trumbo could be traded for Baltimore Orioles C Steve Clevenger. Sources for both teams confirmed trade discussions, but one source said that there are still details that need to be worked out.

Fantasy Tip: Trumbo has been a boom-or-bust hitter throughout his career, and his 30-homer power is offset but a horrible batting average. Still, he would be worth a flier if you are chasing power late in drafts if he ends up playing his home games in Baltimore's hitter-friendly park.

Mariners | Mark Trumbo receiving plenty of interest

Tue, 01 Dec 2015 10:48:42 -0800

Seattle Mariners OF Mark Trumbo is of trade interest to the Baltimore Orioles and Colorado Rockies, according to sources. Trumbo is expected to receive a contract tender before the deadline Wednesday, Dec. 2, and remain on the trade block, if he is not dealt ahead of time.

Fantasy Tip: Trumbo has power potential and has hit the 20-homer mark in each of his four full seasons in the league, and he twice topped 30 home runs. The issue lies in his career .250 batting average and .300 on-base percentage. He checks out as an endgame source of pop in drafts next spring.

Mariners | Mark Trumbo on the move?

Tue, 24 Nov 2015 07:56:15 -0800

Seattle Mariners OF Mark Trumbo is expected to be shopped this offseason, according to rival executives.

Fantasy Tip: Trumbo's numbers didn't suffer much in Safeco Field last season as he hit .264-12-41 at home and .259-10-23 on the road. He would have some upside if he left the spacious confines, though and projects as a third or fourth outfielder in fantasy.

Mariners | Mike Zunino to take back seat

Mon, 23 Nov 2015 18:55:28 -0800

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino has company behind the plate, as the team signed C Chris Iannetta (Angels). General manager Jerry Dipoto said Iannetta was brought in to serve as the team's primary catcher.

Fantasy Tip: Zunino's future is unclear, as it is uncertain if he will be the team's backup, if he will be used as the designated hitter, learn a new position or be traded to another organization. Right now, his fantasy outlook is certainly in the air.

Mariners | Financials for Chris Iannetta

Mon, 23 Nov 2015 18:54:17 -0800

Updating a previous report, the deal for Seattle Mariners C Chris Iannetta is for one-year at $4.25 million plus incentives. There is also an option.

Fantasy Tip: Iannetta is expected to be the starting catcher with Mike Zunino serving as his backup. Iannetta knows the American League West well since he is coming over from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, a team Dipoto previously served as general manager.

Mariners | Robinson Cano happy in Seattle

Mon, 23 Nov 2015 18:53:47 -0800

Seattle Mariners 2B Robinson Cano and his representative refuted a report the player is unhappy in Seattle. General manager Jerry Dipoto said Monday, Nov. 23, that Cano's agent called him and said that the comments weren't from Robinson.

Fantasy Tip: Winning cures everything, and if Cano really is unhappy, perhaps that will solve things. He posted 21 homers in 2015, which was nice, but he also struck out a career-high 107 times while his average tumbled to .287, lowest since 2008. Cano's 79 RBI were also his lowest since 2008.

Mariners | James Paxton throws sim game

Mon, 23 Nov 2015 18:52:58 -0800

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton (finger) throw a seven-inning simulated game Monday, Nov. 23, general manager Jerry Dipoto said. He is expected to repeat that one more time to building his innings count.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton is making his way back from a finger issue which shut him down in the final month. He should be fine well in time for spring training.

Mariners | Chris Iannetta to be primary catcher

Mon, 23 Nov 2015 16:52:51 -0800

Seattle Mariners C Chris Iannetta was signed to be the team's primary catcher next year, according to general manager Jerry Dipoto.

Fantasy Tip: Iannetta had his worst season as a pro in 2015 with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, hitting only .188 (51-for-272) with 10 home runs and 34 RBI. While there's a good chance he'll hit over .200 next year with double-digit home runs, Iannetta's fantasy value remains limited to two-catcher leagues, especially with the move to pitcher-friendly Safeco Field. The signing also shows how much Seattle has soured on Mike Zunino.

Mariners | Chris Iannetta signs with Seattle

Mon, 23 Nov 2015 15:05:41 -0800

Free-agent C Chris Iannetta (Angels) signed a one-year contract with the Seattle Mariners Monday, Nov. 23. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Iannetta hit 10 home runs last season in just 317 plate appearances, but his .188 batting average is too much of an anchor to roster in the majority of seasonal leagues. At best, Iannetta is a low-end catcher in AL-only, cavernous mixed and two-catcher formats heading into the 2016 season.

Mariners | Danny Hultzen designated for assignment

Fri, 20 Nov 2015 10:42:27 -0800

Seattle Mariners SP Danny Hultzen (shoulder) was designated for assignment Friday, Nov. 20. He is out of minor league options and could clear waivers to be outrighted to the minors.

Fantasy Tip: He was once one of the top prospects in all of baseball, but Hultzen missed most of the last three years due to a shoulder injury. He's still only 25. Keep tabs on him in case the lefty can make it back.

Mariners | Leonys Martin likely to start in CF

Mon, 16 Nov 2015 17:07:00 -0800

Seattle Mariners OF Leonys Martin is likely to enter next season as the starting center fielder. He played in just 95 games last year for the Texas Rangers after breaking a bone in his right hand, but he still managed to record 13 outfield assists.

Fantasy Tip: Martin had a down year for Texas, hitting only .219 (63-for-288) with five home runs and 25 RBI. He's primarily defense first, but he did manage to steal 30-plus bases in both 2013 and 2014, and he hasn't lost any speed. Target him as a late-round sleeper source of thefts in 2016 in fantasy drafts.

Mariners | Seattle acquires Leonys Martin

Mon, 16 Nov 2015 14:49:57 -0800

The Seattle Mariners acquired OF Leonys Martin from the Texas Rangers in exchange for RP Tom Wilhelmsen Monday, Nov. 16, according to sources. There are expected to be other players involved in the deal.

Fantasy Tip: After combining for 67 stolen bases during the 2013 and 2014 seasons, Martin flamed out in 2015 and played just 98 games. He returned a .579 OPS and was a huge fantasy bust after showing promising the previous two years. A relocation could help his fantasy stock, and he projects as an endgame source of speed for drafts this spring.

Mariners | Hisashi Iwakuma headed for free agency

Fri, 13 Nov 2015 15:32:25 -0800

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma rejected the Seattle Mariners' one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer Friday, Nov. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Over the past two seasons, Iwakuma has posted a 3.53 ERA, a 3.45 FIP, a 1.06 WHIP and a 7.7 K/9 through 308 2/3 innings. And while seasonal owners should count on him continuing his downward trend since his career-best 2013 season, Iwakuma projects to provide nice value in the later rounds of drafts this spring.

Mariners | Ketel Marte likely to start for SEA

Thu, 12 Nov 2015 18:36:59 -0800

Seattle Mariners SS Ketel Marte is believed to be the front-runner to become the team's regular shortstop in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: The 22-year-old switch-hitter batted .283 with two home runs and 17 RBIs in 57 games during his rookie season and has decent speed. He could be a middle infield option for fantasy teams in AL-only and deep mixed leagues next season.
