Texas Rangers news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Choo has been very solid since coming off the disabled list earlier this month, and he's apparently turned it up over the past week and change. In his last eight ballgames, the 33-year-old has gone 12-for-34 (.353) with three homers, nine runs scored, five RBI and two stolen bases. He's a nice bat to have on fantasy rosters, being the regular leadoff hitter for the best team in the American League.

Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin put together a pretty good start Thursday, June 30, versus the New York Yankees. The right-hander went five innings, issuing only one run on two hits and two walks, including a solo homer. He also struck out eight.
Fantasy Tip: This was Griffin's second start back since coming off the disabled list, and he was actually a bit better than he was in his return outing, so that's certainly a positive takeaway from this assignment. Griffin has posted some solid numbers this year, and as long as he continues to pitch for one of the best teams in baseball, he might be able to sustain consistent value in a lot of fantasy leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Moore held the Red Sox scoreless in his outing Wednesday and has looked a lot better of late after struggling after a fine April. Odorizzi has been decent this year with a 3.93 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 8.4 K/9. Both pitchers wouldn't see a huge boost in fantasy value with a move to Texas and that hitter-friendly park, but they'd have more chances for wins on a first-place club.

Fantasy Tip: Profar's playing time has dwindled of late, but his results haven't. He's 3-for-8 (.375) the last week, and he is hitting .347 in June. He's a solid midrange grab against Michael Pineda.

Fantasy Tip: The 21-year-old Mazara has a five-game hitting streak and is batting .287 with 11 home runs and 35 RBI through the first 70 games of his MLB career. He makes a viable outfield option in all fantasy formats.

Texas Rangers RP Sam Dyson (1-2) allowed four runs on three hits and one walk while recording just one out in a loss to the New York Yankees Wednesday, June 29. In addition to receiving the loss, Dyson was also charged with a blown save.
Fantasy Tip: Dyson had gone unscored upon in his previous seven appearances, so his job as the Rangers' closer appears to be safe for now. It was just his second blown save in 18 opportunities this season.

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels threw only 86 pitches in his win over the New York Yankees Tuesday, June 28, and manager Jeff Banister said the team is looking to limit the lefty where they can at the midway point in the season. Hamels is 4-0 with a 0.65 ERA in his last four starts, and he has been under 100 pitches his last three outings. He is fifth in the American League with 103 2/3 innings and ninth with an average of 102.1 pitches per game.
Fantasy Tip: Hamels has an excellent 2.60 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 8.9 K/9, but has he reached his peak in 2016? A .268 batting average on balls in play, 87.5% strand rate and 4.40 FIP suggest regression is ahead for the lefty, so this would certainly be a good time to consider selling high.

Updating an ongoing story, Texas Rangers SP Yu Darvish (shoulder) is focusing on ironing out a recoil at the end of his delivery to lessen the strain on his right shoulder and increase his velocity. The recoil decelerates his arm speed, and pitching coach Doug Brocail believes it is what caused Darvish's shoulder soreness.
Fantasy Tip: While in the minors rehabbing his shoulder injury is the best time for Darvish to tweak his mechanics and delivery, so assuming he works out any kinks, it shouldn't impact him when he rejoins the Rangers. Continue to stash the fantasy ace in all seasonal leagues, as he appears on track to start approximately 12 to 15 games in the second half.

Updating a previous report, Yu Darvish (shoulder) will throw 60 pitches or four innings in his next outing, whether it is another simulated game or a rehab start. If Darvish reports no soreness in his shoulder Thursday, June 30, the Rangers will discuss the possibility of making a rehab start Monday, July 4, or Tuesday, July 5. Pitching coach Doug Brocail said Darvish will most likely return to the Texas rotation immediately after the All-Star break.
Fantasy Tip: Darvish should be able to make 12 to 15 starts during the second half, which makes him a must-stash hurler in all fantasy setups. Through his past 25 starts, Darvish has a 3.04 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP and 201 strikeouts over 160 innings, after all. Check back for updates.

Texas Rangers SP Yu Darvish (shoulder) pitched well in his simulated game Wednesday, June 29, according to pitching coach Doug Brocail. Brocail noted how Darvish feels Thursday, June 30, will determine whether he is ready for a rehab outing.
Fantasy Tip: While Darvish will be out until after the All-Star break, fantasy owners should still stash him in all setups. He has the potential to produce fantasy ace numbers down the stretch, so check back for updates on his recovery and return timeline.

Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels completed a dazzling month over the New York Yankees on Tuesday, June 28, permitting six hits and a walk while fanning seven over as many innings. Hamels will end the month with a 4-0 record and a 1.51 ERA.
Fantasy Tip: Hamels hasn't given up more than one run in any of his last four outings and has struck out at least seven in three of them. The 2008 World Series MVP is a no-brainer start in fantasy and is slated to face the major-league worst Minnesota Twins twice before the All-Star break, so owners can continue to feel pretty confident in this southpaw.

Texas Rangers RP Keone Kela (elbow) will throw a live batting practice session Thursday, June 30, and if it goes well, he could join Class AAA Round Rock for a rehab assignment Sunday, July 3. The rehab stint projects to last through the All Star break.
Fantasy Tip: Kela proved to be a viable option in deep mixed leagues last season with seven wins, a 2.39 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP and 10.1 K/9 through 60 1/3 innings. When he returns from the elbow injury, he'll likely slot into high-leverage situations and return similar value. However, this was a substantial injury, so it isn't out of the question to take a wait-and-see approach out of the gate.

Texas Rangers SP Derek Holland (shoulder) will play catch sometime this week. During his upcoming rehab assignment, Holland will work on eliminating some pronation with his wrist at the end of his fastball delivery that has led to a fastball that drifts back into the hitting zone and eliminating some of the "fall off" that he has in his delivery that may also lead to lack of command, according to pitching coach Doug Brocail.
Fantasy Tip: With a 5.20 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 5.3 K/9 this season, the pre-injury version of Holland wasn't overly fantasy relevant. Be careful of relying on him as anything more than a low-end option in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues. Stay tuned for updates.

Fantasy Tip: Moreland is out due to the matchup with a lefty pitcher, so sideline him for the evening if you can. The Rangers want to put Profar in the lineup more often so this is an encouraging sign. Profar has seven hits in his last seven games but doesn't play every day. He's reliable in DFS formats for the time being.
Tue, 28 Jun 2016 12:51:35 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Mazara is a casualty of a lefty vs. lefty matchup, so don't be surprised to see him available for pinch-hit duty. Rua only has one hit in his past seven games so he carries little, if any, fantasy value.
