Texas Rangers news, rumors and injuries

Fantasy Tip: Expect this to be a common theme for the left-handed hitting Odor. He's hitting .132 overall and is just 2-for-20 against lefties. At $2,500 (5.0% of your cap), he's not worth using on FantasyScore until his bat awakens. Rosales doesn't have much appeal either.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton (shoulder) is close to being traded to the Texas Rangers, according to sources. There is still a lot of legal work to be done, but the trade is likely to be announced Monday, April 27.
Fantasy Tip: Hamilton ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) had his best years with the Rangers, and averaged 28 home runs and 101 RBI over his five years with the club. He is 34 now, though, and recovering from a shoulder injury. Fantasy owners won't know what to expect from Hamilton anytime soon, either. He is still worth stashing in the majority of formats.

Fantasy Tip: Choo ($3,500, 7.0% of your cap) will heat up and the ball will fly as it warms up in Texas. Avoid him on FantasyScore for now, though.

Fantasy Tip: Gallo has light-tower power and is one of the best prospects in baseball. Watch his progress because he could be called up fairly soon.

Fantasy Tip: Right-handed batters Mike Trout and Albert Pujols are reason enough to avoid southpaw Rodriguez in all formats Friday. At best, Rodriguez is a desperation start in a favorable matchup, but the Angels don't qualify Friday. And that is if he even sticks in the rotation for another start.

Texas Rangers SP Matt Harrison (back) said he's convinced he'll return from a career-threatening back injury. He threw 75 pitches in a bullpen session Monday, April 20, and will throw 80 pitches Friday, April 24. He would graduate to facing hitters the following week. He could be ready for a rehab assignment in three or four weeks. A July 1 return date is possible.
Fantasy Tip: Harrison could be a low-end starter to target in the second half on FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Perez showed flashes of his potential early last season before succumbing to Tommy John surgery. He's a player to watch in the second half.

Texas Rangers SS Elvis Andrus spent all spring working on a small leg kick at the plate that was designed to give him more power, and he had good results. However, he hasn't seen the results yet in the regular season, and his career numbers suggest he'll continue to be a "light" .260-.270 hitter. Andrus is one of nine batting qualifiers with no walks in 2015, and his 63.6% success rate on stolen base attempts of 61 players with at least 30 attempts since the 2014 season ranks 57th.
Fantasy Tip: Andrus ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) is hitting only .164 (9-for-55) with one home run and five RBI to begin the season. He'll need to get on base more often to maximize his fantasy value, and the lineup around him isn't helping his cause. Andrus' ceiling remains limited, especially in Texas, and he's currently a weak FantasyScore option.

Fantasy Tip: Detwiler ($3,000, 6.0% of cap) is on very shaky ground in Texas. Yes, the Rangers rotation is not the best, but changes can and will be made if needed. The best advice is to steer clear of Detwiler, even at that low salary, unless he turns things around.

Fantasy Tip: Moreland ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) was scratched from the starting lineup Friday, because of the elbow, so owners should watch out for an update on his status. Owners on FantasyScore should avoid Moreland until more is known about his status.
Fri, 17 Apr 2015 16:55:02 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Moreland ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) could easily return to the starting lineup tomorrow night. We wouldn't recommend that you start him at FantasyScore, though, as he'd be lined up to face Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez.

Texas Rangers 1B Mitch Moreland was scratched from the lineup Friday, April 17. 1B Adam Rosales will start at first base in his place and hit eighth in the batting order against Seattle Mariners SP J.A. Happ. OF Shin-Soo Choo has been moved up to fifth in the order.
Fantasy Tip: Rosales ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) already has a home run in a spot start this year and was successful against left-handers in 64 at-bats last year, with two of his four home runs coming against them. Rosales, however, remains a dice roll as a FantasyScore sleeper.
Fri, 17 Apr 2015 15:17:07 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Choo ($3,500, 7.0% of cap), like much of the Texas lineup, is off to a slow start in 2015. He's hitting just .182 (4-for-22) with one home run and three RBI. Consider Choo a weaker FantasyScore commodity tonight while being dropped in the order and while facing a southpaw. Choo hit only .236 with four of his 13 home runs against lefties in 2014 in 140 at-bats.
Fri, 17 Apr 2015 15:10:18 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Martin ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) is off to a slow start this year (.143, 6-for-42) for the Rangers and is more of a weak play at FantasyScore tonight against Happ. Martin hit only .250 with two of his seven home runs against southpaws in 2014 in 136 at-bats. Odor ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) also loses a bit of fantasy luster with his move all the way to the bottom of a struggling Texas order.

Texas Rangers 1B Prince Fielder is hitting .400 to start the 2015 season but doesn't have any home runs yet. Opposing pitchers continue to throw him away, and Fielder hasn't tried to pull pitches, instead taking what the pitchers are giving him and using the big part of the field to foil the shift. He has also swung and missed on just four of 62 pitches off the plate on the outside. Fielder said this spring that he knows his swing better and his approach at the plate is more sound.
Fantasy Tip: Fielder ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) is off to a great start this year, minus the home runs. That should be forgiven by his fantasy owners in favor of good health. If his solid approach continues, Fielder could be in for a great year, especially since the power should eventually come. Don't be overly concerned that he's facing a lefty (J.A. Happ) Friday night.
