Rangers | Yovani Gallardo talks maturation

Fri, 27 Feb 2015 14:43:47 -0800

Texas Rangers SP Yovani Gallardo still possesses the same velocity he did as a rookie in 2007, but his arsenal has evolved. He leaned on his slider 24.6% of the time last season but only 7.3% as a rookie, and he has added a sinking fastball to his repertoire which lead to fewer strikeouts and more ground balls. His ground-ball rate climbed to 52.4% last season and it was just 37.9% as a rookie. "The older you get, the more things you figure out on how to get hitters out," Gallardo said.

Fantasy Tip: Gallardo's durability is perhaps his greatest asset to fantasy owners, but he also posted the lowest ERA (3.51) of his career in 2014, which was a somewhat-rebound season. Projecting forward, the increased ground-ball rate should play favorably at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, however, he is still just a late-round flier in mixed leagues with the move to the American League and a hitter-friendly ballpark.

Rangers | Yu Darvish impresses coach

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 14:21:05 -0800

Texas Rangers SP Yu Darvish (elbow) impressed pitching coach Mike Maddux during live batting practice Wednesday, Feb. 25. "I thought Yu was very good, very sharp," Maddux said. "The guys couldn't pull the trigger on him. And then when they did they had a hard time. His stuff was good across the board."

Fantasy Tip: So far, all reports concerning Darvish are glowing, but they usually are during spring training. Continue to view Darvish as a low-end No. 1 starter. However, the case would be there for top-tier billing without injury risks. Expect Darvish to be drafted early, and he should be considered a solid fantasy ace.

Rangers | Leonys Martin wants to remain at leadoff

Wed, 25 Feb 2015 14:10:27 -0800

Texas Rangers OF Leonys Martin, who only hit leadoff in 35 games last year, wants to stick in the role in 2015, and new manager Jeff Bannister appears to be on board. OF Shin-Soo Choo is the other option to hit first, as he was the team's primary leadoff man before being hurt in 2014. Martin has gone over 30 stolen bases in each of the last two years, and he spent much of his offseason working on his baserunning. "I've been a leadoff man my entire career," Martin said. "I'm ready. I want to show I can help my team, get on base and try to score runs."

Fantasy Tip: Martin's back-to-back seasons of 30 stolen bases is comforting when you go to select him in the middle rounds of standard drafts. Hitting leadoff is where he'll have the highest fantasy value, as it'll also boost his runs potential.

Rangers | Jurickson Profar transferred to 60-day DL

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 12:57:55 -0800

Texas Rangers 2B Jurickson Profar (shoulder) has been placed on the 60-day disabled list, effective on Tuesday, Feb. 24.

Fantasy Tip: This move was strictly procedural, as Profar will miss the season due to labrum surgery. Profar may be worth drafting in keeper leagues only for 2016 and beyond, but do not draft him at all in 2015-only formats.

Rangers | Adrian Beltre financials juggled

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 04:39:21 -0800

Texas Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre will now earn $16 million in 2015 and $18 million in 2016 as part of his option being picked up Monday, Feb. 23. The two salaries had previously been reversed.

Fantasy Tip: As previously noted, Beltre remains a safe fantasy value at third base, as he has mastered the art of hitting in Texas' ballpark in the dead of summer.

Rangers | Elvis Andrus lighter this year

Mon, 23 Feb 2015 15:36:14 -0800

Texas Rangers SS Elvis Andrus comes into camp this year a little lighter than he was last year, and he's hoping that'll help him reach 40 stolen bases for the second time in his career. Andrus was ill-prepared for the 2014 season, and he hit .263 with 41 RBI, just 38 extra-base hits and was caught stealing a league-high 15 times. He added yoga and pilates to his workout routine this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Andrus' rough 2014 season all around will cause many of your league mates to sour on him this year. However, he's only a year removed from 42 stolen bases and two years removed from a .286 average. He won't ever hit for power, but Andrus presents a nice buying opportunity at a very scarce position.

Rangers | Jurickson Profar has surgery

Mon, 23 Feb 2015 11:15:30 -0800

Texas Rangers 2B Jurickson Profar (shoulder) had successful surgery on his shoulder Monday, Feb. 23, and he's expected to miss the entire 2015 season. Profar will need a year for his arm to get back to 100%.

Fantasy Tip: You can forget about Profar in all single-year fantasy baseball formats in 2015. His absence will increase the value of Rougned Odor at the keystone in Texas, though. Odor provides a nice combo of power and speed that'll be available in the latter parts of mixed drafts.

Rangers | Adrian Beltre's option picked up

Mon, 23 Feb 2015 11:08:26 -0800

Texas Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre had his option for the 2016 season picked up Monday, Feb. 23.

Fantasy Tip: Despite his age (36 in April), Beltre remains one of the safer power options at third base for fantasy owners. He is listed as second behind Anthony Rendon in our fantasy third base rankings for 2015. Injuries may be a concern, though, so make sure you have plenty of insurance behind him.

Rangers | Adrian Beltre could return in 2016

Sun, 22 Feb 2015 11:15:13 -0800

The Texas Rangers are considering exercising their 2016 contract option for 3B Adrian Beltre, even though his deal can be voided if he fails to reach 586 plate appearances this season, according to general manager Jon Daniels. Beltre is slated to earn $18 million in 2015 as part of the final season of a five-year, $80 million deal. If the Rangers bring him back in 2016, he would make $16 million.

Fantasy Tip: Beltre will turn 36 during the opening week of the season and remains one of the league's better third basemen, although his power numbers dipped somewhat last year. He is likely to be selected in the early rounds of fantasy baseball drafts.

Rangers | No lingering elbow issues for Yu Darvish

Sun, 22 Feb 2015 05:49:45 -0800

Texas Rangers SP Yu Darvish (elbow) threw "very well" during the first bullpen session of the first official workout Saturday, Feb. 21, and he has no issues with his elbow, according to pitching coach Mike Maddux. Maddux also noted the ball was coming out of Darvish's hand clean, and Darvish had good command of his pitches.

Fantasy Tip: Darvish has ace upside, and he could come at a discount in drafts because of the injury concerns. Over 83 starts during his career, Darvish has a 11.2 K/9 mark and struck out a league-leading 277 hitters during the 2013 season. As long as there are no setbacks during spring training, building your fake pitching staff around Darvish is a great starting point. Expect him to fly off the board in the third or fourth round on draft day.

Rangers | Jurickson Profar has torn labrum

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 13:39:56 -0800

Updating a previous report, Texas Rangers 2B Jurickson Profar's (shoulder) surgery Monday, Feb. 23, will be to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. It is believed Profar's shoulder instability has been the result of his torn labrum.

Fantasy Tip: Until Profar has a clear recovery timetable, it will be difficult to gauge his value in seasonal formats. Therefore, he is likely best left undrafted in the majority of leagues. He still has the pedigree to warrant attention in keeper/dynasty formats, though, and there is a chance he may actually be undervalued. Continue to check back for updates on his return timeline and the severity of his injury.

Rangers | Jurickson Profar requires surgery

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 13:26:59 -0800

Texas Rangers 2B Jurickson Profar (shoulder) will undergo shoulder surgery Monday, Feb. 23, in Arlington, Texas. He had been having MRIs every three weeks to monitor his situation, and the exam Tuesday, Feb. 17, revealed increased strain on the subscapularis muscle in his right shoulder. Profar's recovery timetable cannot be determined until the extent of the surgery is known.

Fantasy Tip: At this point, Profar is nothing but a late-round flier and likely not worth a pick in the majority of seasonal leagues. He still has value in keeper/dynasty formats, where his fantasy stock may even slip into profit territory. Continue to check back for updates, especially on the severity of the injury and Profar's recovery timeline.

Rangers | Strikeouts a concern for Joey Gallo

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 15:25:59 -0800

Texas Rangers 3B Joey Gallo struck out 179 times between Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach and Double-A Frisco, and the No. 1 thing on the agenda is to quiet Gallo's swing to limit his strikeouts, according to hitting coach Dave Madadan. "He's a big guy so he has a lot of moving parts. If we can cut down those variables and be more consistent with his swing, we can cut down those strikeouts, and his pitch selection will improve. It improved last year over 2013, so if we can continue that trajectory, we'll have a pretty special player."

Fantasy Tip: With just 68 at-bats at the Double-A level, Gallo is expected to start the season in the minors. Still, he is one of the premiere power prospects in baseball and is worth consideration in the endgame of deeper drafts, especially if he has a solid spring. Keeping tabs on his progress during the season for an early speculative add is encouraged in all formats.

Rangers | Shin-Soo Choo moving around well

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 13:44:00 -0800

Texas Rangers OF Shin-Soo Choo (ankle, elbow) has reported to camp early and worked in the outfield for the first time Monday, Feb. 16, since undergoing season-ending surgery on his left ankle and left elbow last year. "I moved around, caught fly balls, threw the ball," Choo said. "I feel really happy and very excited to play the field. It made me smile. We took it light and easy, but I was happy to be out there again."

Fantasy Tip: You can lump Choo into the group of injured outfielders this year that will come at a discount because of what happened last year. A 20-20 season isn't a full stretch while playing in Texas, assuming he's fully healthy in 2015. Those kind of numbers would be a steal in the middle rounds of your mixed draft.

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 13:41:51 -0800

Texas Rangers 1B Ronald Guzman has cleared all of his legal issues in the Dominican Republic and is expected to report on time to camp with the rest of the minor leaguers next month.
