Texas Rangers news, rumors and injuries

Texas Rangers SP Derek Holland (shoulder) made it through a bullpen session Monday, July 27, without any issues, and he is still scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Thursday, July 30. Holland is expected to begin at two innings and 30 pitches, but the Rangers haven't announced any details.
Fantasy Tip: Holland ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) is still a long way from a return, and he should be left on waiver wires in everything but deeper AL-only leagues.

Fantasy Tip: While Rua ($2,300, 4.6% of cap) is typically one to avoid on FantasyScore, he faces a juicy matchup against Capuano tonight and could come in handy as a deep sleeper. Despite a .179 (7-for-39) average against lefties in 2015, Rua has hit two of his three home runs off them this year.

Texas Rangers 1B Prince Fielder is 4-for-11 with two home runs in his career off of New York Yankees SP Chris Capuano, who he faces Tuesday, July 27. Fielder is hitting .412 with five home runs and 18 RBI during his 12-game hitting streak against the Yankees.
Fantasy Tip: We don't typically recommend lefty hitters against southpaws, but this may be an exception. Fielder has a .287 average and .835 OPS with seven of his 15 home runs against lefties in 2015, and Capuano shouldn't strike fear in Fielder tonight.

Fantasy Tip: Choo ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) is in a favorable lineup spot as a value play tonight on FantasyScore, and he has 10 of his 12 home runs this year against right-handed pitchers. The fact that he has eight hits in his last 20 at-bats (.400) with a home run and seven RBI since July 18 is another reason to consider Choo tonight.

Fantasy Tip: Martin ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) has struggled mightily this season and has five hits in 28 at-bats (.179) in July with only one RBI. His struggles at the dish have made him a bench player of late, too. He's not a good daily pick until he shows signs of breaking his slump.

Fantasy Tip: Hamilton ($3,400, 6.8% of cap) is only hitting .222 versus lefties this season and .218 during the month of July, making him a risky play in FantasyScore this afternoon.
Sun, 26 Jul 2015 11:32:58 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Telis ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) is 2-for-6 with one RBI this season and is a career .257 hitter. Unless you are in desperate need of FantasyScore salary cap relief, avoid using him.
Sun, 26 Jul 2015 11:31:56 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Moreland ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) is only batting .203 with two home runs and six RBIs through 59 at-bats this month. FantasyScore owners should be able to find far better options at first base.
Sat, 25 Jul 2015 15:45:37 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Rosales ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) has a .235-3-7 line this year and isn't worth a start on FantasyScore.

The Texas Rangers have intensified trade talks with the Philadelphia Phillies regarding SP Cole Hamels, according to a major league source. However, they are unlikely to part with top prospects such as 3B Joey Gallo and OF Nomar Mazara in any potential deal and want the Phillies to pick up a chunk of his contract.
Fantasy Tip: Hamels ($8,300, 16.6% of cap) is appealing to the Rangers because he is under contract through the 2018 season, with a vesting option for 2019. He will start against the Chicago Cubs Saturday, July 25, but FantasyScore owners should avoid using him because he is 0-2 with a 19.89 ERA over his last two starts.

Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said the team is not close to dealing SP Yovani Gallardo and he is expected to make his scheduled start against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Saturday, July 25.
Fantasy Tip: The Rangers are in an unusual situation because they could be both buyers and sellers at the trade deadline. They are within reach of a playoff berth but are also trying to position themselves to be competitive beyond 2015 and would prefer to acquire players who aren't rentals. Gallardo ($7,000, 14.0% of cap) is 7-9 with a 2.91 ERA through 20 starts but has won just one of his four starts this month.

Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis struck out nine batters over 7 2/3 innings while allowing two runs on five hits and a walk during the Rangers' 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday, July 24.
Fantasy Tip: While Lewis ($4,300, 8.6% of cap) is up to 10 wins this season, his underlying statistics are far less favorable. He spots a 4.49 ERA, a 3.82 FIP, a 1.19 WHIP and a 6.8 K/9. Seasonal owners who are chasing wins could take a stab at Lewis, but you'll want to keep your expectations in check.

Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez allowed four runs - three earned - and six hits while allowed four walks over six innings in a no-decision Wednesday, July 22, against the Colorado Rockies. Perez hasn't had a win in 15 months, spending a majority of that time on the sidelines recovering from Tommy John surgery last May.
Fantasy Tip: Perez ($4,200; or 8.4% of cap) hasn't been that crisp, but he has also missed quite a bit of time so FantasyScore players will want to avoid him until he starts ticking off wins and pitching with more efficiency.
Wed, 22 Jul 2015 18:21:21 -0700
Fantasy Tip: It wasn't all great for Odor ($4,900; or 9.8% of cap), as he did commit a pair of errors, but FantasyScore players don't much care about that unless it eats into his playing time. He has three or more hits three times in the past six games, so his defensive miscues are unlikely to cost him playing time.
Wed, 22 Jul 2015 10:25:39 -0700
Fantasy Tip: Moreland ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) faces lefty Jorge De La Rosa, and he has just a .256-2-7 line against lefties this year. Moreland is still a solid midrange choice on FantasyScore in the hitter's paradise.
